YOUR MAMA’S NOTES: Several thoughtful snitches sent digital missives to let us know alt-rock singer/songwriter Jakob Dylan put his single-level, hilltop residence above Malibu’s Point Dume up for sale this week with an asking price of $7.25 million. Property records and other online resources indicate the two-time Grammy-winning Wallflowers frontman, the son of venerable music industry iconoclast Bob Dylan, and his wife, screenwriter Paige Dylan — she most recently adapted the Amy Koppelman-written novel “I Smile Back” into an unflinching addiction drama starring comedian Sarah Silverman — acquired the 2.16-acre spread via trust in early 2011 for $4.25 million.
Current listing details show the concrete-sided and stacked stone-accented contemporary, concealed behind electronic driveway gates and a dense row of tall privet hedges, measures in at 5,941 square feet with a total of six bedroom and four full and three half bathrooms along with all manner of state-of-the-art bells and whistles that include a camera-equipped security setup, a comprehensive home automation system and an integrated sound system. An unusually arced, concrete-floored combination living/dining room is plenty spacious enough to accommodate a grand piano between the living and dining areas and features a fireplace and a dramatic, curved wall of floor-to-ceiling windows that provide sweeping ocean and coastline views over Point Dume. The streamlined center-island kitchen is open to living/dining room and sleekly fitted with ebonized flat-fronted cabinets, extra-thick, solid-surface countertops, and high-grade stainless-steel appliances. A sunny den just off the living room has wood-framed glass doors that open directly to the pool terrace, and a separate media lounge sports a movie screen that drops out of the ceiling at the touch of a button.
There are three en suite guest/family bedrooms, according to listing details, plus a roomy, wood-floored master suite composed of chandelier-lit sitting room, fireplace-warmed bedroom with backyard access, and a deluxe if austere, monochromatically gray bathroom with soaking tub set into a concrete plinth and a separate, glass-enclosed and concrete-lined multi-head shower space. Listing details indicate the main house includes a gym and unspecified number of “bonus rooms” while a detached structure, all but invisibly tucked into the hillside below the house underneath a flat carpet of lawn, is currently kitted out as a recording studio with its own ocean-view terrace cantilevered over the hillside. The bedroom wing opens to a flat grassy yard where listing photos show an elaborate children’s play structure and the living room leads out to a second and also flat section of yard that includes an expanse of lawn, lots of flagstone terracing for lounging, dining and sunbathing, a built-in barbecue and an infinity-edge swimming pool and spa.
Avid celebrity real estate watchers know this house above Point Dume is hardly the first Malibu property owned by the Mister Dylan. The father of four, who once owned a house in the Hollywood Hills he sold in March 2000 for $1.875 million to Renee Zellweger, has owned at least two other smaller estates in the Point Dume area: a modestly sized but fully renovated and upgraded ranch house and studio on just over an acre — sold in the latter days of 2011 for $3.75 million — and a gated, 1.06-acre tennis-court estate with a completely remodeled 1950s Spanish residence and separate guesthouse that he and the missus picked up in early 2011 for $3.98 million and off-loaded in May 2014 at $7.375 million.
