YOUR MAMA’S NOTES: For more than a decade Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson have quietly owned three neighboring homes on four contiguous parcels on a particularly premier street along the so-called Amalfi Rim in the casually ritzy Riviera neighborhood in the Pacific Palisades area of Los Angeles, two of which have come up for sale on the open market, as was first sussed and sorted out by the savvy celebrity property gossip at the L.A. Times, with a combined asking price of $18 million.
The smaller residence — a 1930s Spanish Revival-style villa with four bedrooms and 4.5 bathrooms in 3,930-square-feet purchased in March 2003 for $5.7 million per property records — is currently listed at $8.75 million. For many years the property was widely misidentified here, there, and just about everywhere as owned by actor Matt LeBlanc. Online marketing materials show there are glossy wood floors and wood beamed ceilings as well as a slew of carefully maintained original fixtures, ironwork and tile throughout. A step-down formal living room with fireplace and elegant paneled dining room are joined by a library/den and the decidedly contemporary high-end kitchen opens over a double wide center island to an intimately proportioned family room with fireplace and wet bar. On its backside the house opens to a flat and grassy yard with mature shade trees, colorfully tiled fountain, sunken spa, and open canyon and mountain views.
The neighboring house — a turreted and stone-accented clapboard-clad affair of no defining architectural vernacular with 7 bedrooms and 6.5 bathrooms in 7,260-square-feet that last traded hands according to property records we peeped in January 2007 for $7.4 million — is currently available at $9.25 million. The three-story residence, built in 1957 and described in listing details as a “Grand traditional style home with young-at-heart-feel,” provides formal living and dining rooms plus a spacious pub/billiard room with exposed wood vaulted ceiling, brick fireplace and wet bar. There’s also French door lined sun room the opens to the backyard, a spacious, sky-lit, and well-equipped if slightly outdated eat-in kitchen, and a large bonus room suitable for use as, according to marketing materials, a screening room or “sports entertainment room.” Two guest bedrooms and a staff suite are situated on the lower level and there are three more guest/family bedrooms on the second floor along with a “sumptuous master suite” with “lavish bath and closets.” The third floor holds what listings call “a large playroom.” The .56-acre property’s landscaped grounds include a double gated motor court and side-facing three-car garage at the front and a long and flat backyard with gravelled dining and lounging terraces fragrantly lined with lavender bushes and a generous sweep of flat lawn and, like the property next door, long and lovely mountain and canyon vistas. Neither property has a swimming pool.
The third house, a down on her heels ranch style home of 4,267-square-feet, sits on two plum parcels that total 1.08 acres according our trusty bejeweled abacus and property records indicate the two-parcels were acquired via trust in July 1996 for an unrecorded amount. As of today this property is not currently for sale, at least not on the open market.
The Hanks, veteran Hollywood A-listers with two Oscars, four Golden Globes, seven Emmys, and big fat property portfolio of multi-million dollar homes to prove it, make their primary residence in a striking Gwathmey-Siegel designed contemporary of about 14,500-square-feet perched on a private Pacific Palisades promontory with unobstructed city and ocean views. They scooped up the glassy mansion for about $26.1 million in 2010 — the sellers were Oscar-hoovering married movie producers Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall — and they also own a much more modest house on a contiguous lot that was purchased separately but concurrently for $1.45 million. The Hanks also maintain an ocean front getaway inside the illustrious guarded gates of the Colony enclave in Malibu — purchased in 1991 for $2.95 million from “The Manchurian Candidate” director John Frankenheimer — and two neighboring homes just a couple of blocks outside downtown Pacific Palisades — one bought in May 1992 for $792,000 and the other in June 1997 for $350,000 — along with a substantial residence near Sun Valley, Idaho.
