YOUR MAMA’S NOTES: Oscar and Emmy nominated actress Taraji P. Henson has rented her modest starter house in Glendale, CA, at a rate of $3,700 per month, according to the Multiple Listing Service, well above its published $3,400 list price. As best as we can tell from a careful perusal of various property record databases, the in-demand film and television star, who as far as this property gossip is concerned was a revelation as Cookie Lyon in the first season of the Fox melodrama “Empire,” purchased the 1,406-square-foot, 1930s Spanish bungalow, perched high on a ridge line property in the Woodbury neighborhood, in 2002 for $431,000.
A tile-accented exterior staircase runs alongside a street level two-car garage as it makes its long, booty-busting climb to the front door. Dark chocolate wood floors run throughout the freshly painted bi-level interiors that include two bedrooms and two bathrooms plus a powder room, per listing details. Just inside the front door the living room features a tiled fireplace, an arched niche for knick-knacks, and a trio of picture windows. It’s about half a flight up to the dining room where a full wall of multi-paned windows and French doors open to the backyard. The adjacent kitchen is roomy enough and well maintained if stylistically outdated with perfectly ordinary snow-white raised panel cabinetry, even more quotidian speckled grey counter tops of unknown material, a stainless steel topped center island, and a tightly grouped collection of black appliances that digital lease listings describe as “newer.”
Neither bedroom looks particularly spacious in listing photos but both appear to have unfortunate textured ceilings, cheap-looking ceiling lights and French door access to the backyard. There’s a flexi-use bonus room outside one of the bedrooms, per listing details, and at least one of the two bathrooms includes a wacky corner tub-shower combination that appears in listing photos to sit so uncomfortably close to the single-sink vanity that we can imagine a person with unusually large calves might have some accessibility issues. Also of note in the bathroom, besides the sorrowfully beige and misaligned tile work that lines the tub/shower, is the under-the-window shower head that appears like it might be so lowly mounted as to only be comfortably functional for a child. (Of course, pictures may tell a thousand stories but they do not always tell the truth. Therefore we suggest y’all take our snarky bathroom commentary with a grain of salt. It could be the angle’s funny on the photo and in actuality, even though we would definitely not bet our grandmother it is, the gap between the vanity and the tub very well may be as wide as the Mississippi. Anyways…)
A slender covered patio outside the dining room overlooks a diving board equipped swimming pool ringed by a thicket of spiky, deserty looking plants. A ramp from the pool deck passes through a forest of more spiky, deserty plants — Mind the eyeballs, children! — as it makes a gentle, sinuous descent to a sizable red brick terrace set into the hillside below the house where it has an oblique view towards downtown Pasadena over a massive, intricate and frequently trafficked choked freeway interchange.
Iffin this property gossip is being honest — and we always are — we’d confess we have no idea where Miz Henson currently resides and, given that she previously offered her Glendale house out for lease in early 2013 at $3,100 per month, it would seem she moved out and very likely upgraded her residential circumstances some time ago.
