YOUR MAMA’S NOTES: It seems that grandly idiosyncratic pop star Sia has caught a genuine case of what we like to call The Celebrity Real Estate Fickle. Just four months ago the enigmatic Australian singer and pop ditty writer and her documentary filmmaker husband, Erik Anders Lang, shelled out $4.7 million — $400,000 more than the $4.299 million asking price — for an arrestingly offbeat house in the foothills above L.A.’s celeb-favored Los Feliz area that, we’ve now heard from several friendly peeps including the PR gal at Trulia, has returned to the open market with an asking price of $4.995 million.
A charismatic mix of Mediterranean Revival and Art Nouveau styles, the circa 1924 residence was designed by illustrious architect AF Leicht and is currently configured, per listing details, with five bedrooms and 4.5 bathrooms in 5,161 square feet over three floors. A cursory comparison between current listing photographs and those used to market the property at the time of Miz Furler and Mister Lang’s purchase indicate that although a bevy original architectural details remain intact — vintage light fixtures, carved woodwork, stained glass windows —the arty-farty couple made a couple of significant alterations to interior spaces. It appears the wood floors throughout the house were lightened, a brand new and nearly all white kitchen was installed with thickly veined slab marble counter tops and a vintage range, and just about every interior surface and architectural detail, including most window frames and the tile floors in the circular foyer and staircase, has been slathered in crisp white paint that we can all be certain will flabbergast a persnickety architectural preservationist or two. The property’s .35-acre terraced grounds include a number of balconies, courtyards and patios ringed by lush plantings and meandering paths, a flat patch of grass, a waterfall and rock-lined riverbed, and, set well below the house, a secluded swimming pool and what listing descriptions describe as a “destination spa.”
The internationally celebrated if reluctantly famous Grammy nominated singer who often goes to exotically elaborate lengths to hide her face, continues to own another much smaller, 1930s bungalow in the nearby Echo Park ‘hood that she picked up in August 2012 for $890,000 as well as a characteristically quirky compound in Palm Springs — it was originally built as a small apartment complex — that she acquired in the last days of 2013 for $1.646 million.
