YOUR MAMA’S NOTES: A little birdie delivered a covert communiqué over the weekend to let Your Mama know that, after nearly a year on the market, producer Sharre Jacoby and entrepreneurial venture capitalist Alan Baral have sold their celebrity pedigreed pad in L.A’s affluent Los Feliz Oaks neighborhood for $3,100,000, a high price by any standard but substantially lower than its original $3,995,000 asking price.
Property records show Miz Jacoby and Mister Baral acquired the Art Deco-infused 1930’s Spanish style casa in April 2003 for $2.35 from producer Lisa Henson, the daughter of master puppeteer Jim Henson. Miz Henson and her now ex-husband purchased the property in late 2001 for $1.8 million from Paul Thomas Anderson and Fiona Apple who’d only owned the property since September 1998 when they bought it for an unknown amount from Jason Priestley who, as far as this property gossip can surmise, bought it in 1993, also for an unknown amount. Apparently not-for-profit public radio pays pretty damn well because one of Your Mama’s well connected snitches told us the new owners are NPR West managing director Quinn O’Toole and his wife Caroline Horrigan.
Listing details show the approximately 4,700 square foot walled and gated hillside house sits on a .29 acre lot with five bedrooms and six bathrooms that include a roomy master suite with fitted walk-in closet, dressing area, and attached bathroom with well-maintained original tile work. Indeed, wacky and wonderful (if not necessarily original) tile work abounds throughout in the updated mullet-style residence — it’s single story in the front and three stories at the back — including in the front entrance hall where boldly jewel-toned starburst pattern floor tiles make a boozy-woozy old coot like Your Mama feel dizzy with decorative delight.
Just inside the front door a spacious and sumptuously decorated formal living room is defined by a shimmering, silver-leafed barrel-vaulted ceiling and has wood floors, a wood-burning fireplace and a couples sets of French doors that open to a wrought-iron railed wrap around terrace with canyon and city views. The Formal dining room also has French doors and wood floors as well as an Art-Deco-minded molded ceiling that makes Your Mama shiver with discomfort.
Both the entrance hall and the dining room link through to a compact but expensively outfitted eat in kitchen with wood floors, slab marble-topped cherry cabinetry, high-grade commercial-style stainless steel appliances, a built-in breakfast banquette (plus a two or three seat snack counter) and a lustrous, silver-toned pressed tin ceiling that in Your Mama’s humble and entirely meaningless opinion feels wonky and just plain wrong for this house.
As per digital marketing materials, other notable interior features and luxury-minded creature comforts include a small fitness room, laundry room, steam room, and a large home office and a petite, lower level den and leads in to a flamboyant, Art Deco home theater with a comfy couches and a short row of (not so comfy looking) vintage theater seats.
The flat and private backyard area sits somewhat inconveniently well below the house but is nicely outfitted with a multilevel flag stone terracing, a sizable swimming pool and separate in-ground sap, and an eight-sided open air cabana with fireplace and full kitchen.
As of today, the O’Toole-Horrigans continue to own a 1930’s Spanish style residence with three bedrooms and two bathrooms that property records show the picked up in March 2009 for $1,079,000.
