YOUR MAMA’S NOTES: A fully furnished California ranch-style residence in L.A.’s celeb-packed Outpost Estates neighborhood, owned by actress and budding producer Salma Hayek, has become available as a fully furnished rental with an asking price of $9,750 per month. As best as we can tell from a careful parse of property records, the Oscar-nominated star acquired the property, on a 0.58-acre parcel at the tail end of a shared private drive, in late 1996 for $537,500, and current listing details show the hip-roofed, circa 1960s single-story abode has four bedrooms and three bathrooms in 2,874 square feet.
A wood floored, flat ceiled and — much to our persnickety decorative consternation — lavender-walled combination living and dining room has a raised hearth fireplace with a trio of curiously asymmetrical arched and lighted display niches above the rustic wood plank mantelpiece along with a full wall of wood built-ins with open shelving and closed storage. An adjoining lounge/family room has a vaulted and beamed ceiling and three entire walls of floor-to-ceiling windows that look upon and open to the swimming pool and gardens. A swinging door in the dining area opens to a compact, Mexican paver-tiled breakfast nook and kitchen with peculiarly faux-painted cabinetry, utilitarian ceramic tile countertops and, per listing details, all new stainless steel appliances.
At least two of the four bedrooms have direct access to the outdoors through French doors, and the master suite additionally offers a bi-level walk-in closet and dressing room as well as a bathroom sheathed in spa-style turquoise glass tiles and fitted with a claw-footed soaking tub, tiled shower and a wood-topped vanity with a frosted glass vessel sink. Listen, kids, we know vessel sinks were very trendy for a time and may still be very popular with some people but, frankly, this property gossip doesn’t care for them one bit because, in our unsolicited and utterly meaningless opinion, they too often look like a dog bowl sitting on the counter. The back of the house makes an obtuse angle around a pill-shaped swimming pool and tiled terrace that steps up to an elevated sun deck that, in turn, steps down to a lower deck with a postcard-worthy down-the-canyon city view.
Given her own couple of decades of showbiz success and the multibillion-dollar family fortune of her husband, French businessman and luxury goods heir François-Henri Pinault, we just assume the Mexican-born bombshell owns or has access to any number of posh homes around the globe and, far as we know, when in Los Angeles the couple still shack up in a sumptuous and fully updated and upgraded 1930s mansion in a plum section of Bel Air they acquired in 2007 for $13.5 million from sitcom staple Kelsey Grammer.
