YOUR MAMA’S NOTES: Having decamped to a substantially larger and even more lavish Beverly Hills estate — more on that in a minute — British pop star Robbie Williams has not all that surprisingly hoisted his no-longer-needed mansion in the guard-gated and celeb-stocked Mulholland Estates enclave in the Beverly Hills Post Office area up for sale on the open market at $11 million. The former Take That boy band member turned top-selling solo artist — by some accounts he’s sold more than 70 million albums worldwide — purchased the 10,681-square-foot mansion in July 2002 from country music star Clint Black and “Knots Landing” actress Lisa Hartman Black for $5.45 million. The mansion, a vaguely chateau-esque sort of thing described in online marketing materials as a “newly restored modern traditional,” sits on nearly three-quarters of an acre with a total of seven bedrooms and 11 bathrooms.
Glass and wrought iron doors set into a curtained porch open to a capacious, double height foyer with polished stone floor, over-sized circular sky light, and gracefully curved stone-tread staircase perfect for prom pictures and theatrical cocktail party entrances. A sitting room just inside the front door features a carved marble fireplace, custom built-in bookshelf unit, intricate dentil moldings, and walls covered in decadently somber black damask while he adjoining formal living room has a room-wide bank of nearly floor-to-ceiling glass doors and the formal dining room is done up a mirrored wall that is probably brilliantly effective by candlelight but, none-the-less, comes off to this property gossip as decoratively démodé. Less formal family quarters include a huge and expensively outfitted kitchen with gray solid surface counter tops, shimmering stainless steel tile backsplash, and a center island with raised snack bar set at an unnecessarily wacky cattywompus 45-degree angle to the room. The kitchen opens to a breakfast room contained in a window-lined semi-circular bay and links through to an octagonal family room with fireplace and two sets of according fold glass doors on opposing wall that open one side of the room to a lushly planted courtyard and the other to the backyard.
In addition to four en suite guest/family bedrooms on the second floor there’s a privately positioned master suite composed of over-sized bedroom, TV lounge with champagne-colored damask wall covering and tented ceiling treatment, large city-view terrace, and a custom-fitted walk-in closet/dressing room with lighted shoe shelves. The spa-style master bathroom has a stone-faced floating vanity, multi-person soaking tub, glass-enclosed shower, and built-in cushioned banquette. A garret-like, two-room guest suite with kitchenette and lounge appears to be tucked up into the sloped-roofed and dormer-windowed attic space on the third floor and listing details show there’s a staff suite as well as a partly glass-roofed and mirror-walled fitness room on the main floor. The back of the house opens to a flat and privately landscaped yard that incorporates a dining loggia with TV surmounted fireplace, built-in grilling station, expansive stone terracing and a generous sweep of lawn, a tented cabana alongside the swimming pool and, integrated in to a tumble of boulders, a grotto-like spa and water slide.
A few of the many high-profile home owners in the Mulholland Estates enclave include Paris Hilton, Christina Aguilera, Charlie Sheen, Vanna White, Judith Light and former “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” cast member Adrienne Maloof.
Back in the U.K., Mister Williams, married since 2010 to American actress Ayda Fields, owns a gargantuan 46-room mansion in West London’s hoity-toity Holland Park ‘hood that he picked up in the latter days of 2013 from the estate of late film director Michael Winner for £17.5 million, an amount our handy-dandy currency conversion contraption shows equals $24,855,600 at today’s rates. According to the British tabs Mister Williams ran into some troubles with his new neighbor — that would be Jimmy Page of the iconic 1970s rock band Led Zeppelin — who objected to and attempted to curtail any renovation and/or expansion plans that might damage or otherwise compromise the condition of his own historically important residence next door.
Stateside, Mister Williams has owned a number of multi-million dollar properties in Los Angeles. He quietly owned a vacant 3.12-acre residential parcel in the Mulholland Estates that was sold in early 2014 for $7 million to a Las Vegas-based corporate entity tied to venture capitalist Eddie Aslanian — the same fellow who sold a massive mansion in the Mount Olympus ‘hood for $20 million to software heiress and high-powered film producer Megan Ellison — as well as a multi-residence compound on a flat knoll just above Mulholland Drive in the Beverly Hills Post Office area where he famously installed a full-sized soccer pitch. That compound, bought in early 2005 for $3.7 million and less than a mile from the Mulholland Estates mansion now up for grabs, was sold at a loss in May 2013 for $3,278,000. And, as mentioned above, late last year (2015) the obviously exceedingly deep-pocketed Mister Williams paid apparel magnate Armand Marciano $32.67 million for a city-view estate of nearly three acres high in the mountains above Beverly Hills that includes a titanic 24,260-square-foot faux-Tuscan villa with seven bedrooms and 13 bathrooms plus three more en suite staff bedrooms. There’s also a sizable guest house next to a mosaic tiled swimming pool, vast lawns and flowering gardens, a hidden tennis court, and garage parking for 11 cars.
