YOUR MAMA’S NOTES: For the last eight years President Barack Obama and his family have returned to his home state of Hawaii for the Christmas holiday and for the last couple of years the First Family has rented the same house in Kailua on the eastern shore of Oahu that’s described in online listings we turned up as a “breathtaking Asian style oceanfront estate.” Located in a swanky gated enclave in the upscale Kailuana neighborhood and known as the Hale Reena Estate, the property provides a gated motor court large enough to park a handful of secret service SUVs and online marketing materials indicate the casually luxurious single-story residence sprawls across 5,260-square-feet with five en suite bedrooms and 6.5 bathrooms.
A tropically landscaped entry courtyard with lava rock surrounded lagoon-style swimming pool and spa is ringed by a series of deep lanais, one of which includes an outdoor grilling station. Carved wood doors open into the central living room with hardwood floors and a vaulted, exposed wood ceiling. There’s also a formal dining room with built-in buffet and an eat-in kitchen with all the bells and whistles a presidential chef might desire or require.
