YOUR MAMA’S NOTES: A 1920s Spanish-style residence in the foothills above Hollywood, owned per property records by 8-time Emmy winning former “Ellen” and “Oprah” producer Melissa Geiger Schrift and five-time Emmy nominated “Jimmy Kimmel Live” producer Jason Schrift, has come up for sale with an asking price of $1.795 million. Mister and Missus Schrift purchased the property in September 2007 for $1.606 million and current listing details show the three-story residence, on a hillside parcel behind a low wall and a tall privet hedge in the historic Hollywood Dell neighborhood, has four bedrooms and three bathrooms in 3,268-square-feet of ephemera-filled interior space that, according to listing descriptions, “captures classic 1920’s old Hollywood charm while tapping into the modern conveniences of today’s lifestyle.”
With groceries or a baby stroller, it’s bit of a hike up a tile-accented and wrought iron railed stairway from the gated street entrance to the front door that’s set in to a downright baronial faux-quoined arch and opens to a classic center hall entry. Milk chocolate hued hardwoods run throughout the majority of the main floor living spaces that include a step-down living room with fireplace and ornate plaster ceiling detail, a navy blue walled den/family room with original Batchelder fireplace and open shelves where Miz Geiger Schrift displays her trove of Emmy statuettes, and an ample dining room with wood-trimmed arched windows accented by decorative wrought iron window screens. A breakfast nook with built-in buffet and what listing details describe as a “rare Batchelder tile floor” is open to the spacious if slightly awkwardly arranged kitchen that sports marble counter tops, glass-fronted upper cabinets that extend all the way to the ceiling, an expensive collection of name-brand stainless steel appliances, and a central work island positioned below a pot rack that looks ready, willing and able to snatch a wig or concuss an unsuspecting noggin at any moment. There’s a small office or potential guest/staff bedroom off the kitchen along with a full bathroom — the only bathroom on the main floor, which means guests must tramp through the kitchen to use it — and a discreet staircase in a vestibule that links the foyer to the kitchen leads down to a three-car garage and large laundry room.
Two guest/family bedrooms on the upper floor share a hall bathroom with black and white checkerboard tiles on the floor and vintage emerald-green vintage tiles on the walls while the master suite offers two closets — one of them a good-sized walk-in — and French doors to an awning shaded balcony with an over-the-tree tops city lights view. The large and window-lined master bathroom, slathered in neutral and, hence, decoratively unimaginative but probably quite pricey beige stone tiles, is outfitted with a double sink vanity, triangular soaking tub and over-sized separate shower. The master bathroom opens to a tiny terrace and corkscrew staircase that winds down to a courtyard-sized multi-level backyard that manages to squeeze in a lounge area with outdoor fireplace, an itty-bitty circular splash pool, and a charming dining patio under the branches of a tree laced with fairy lights. A small side yard girdled by a towering hedge has low- to no-maintenance and drought resistant artificial turf and a slender terrace below the living room at the front of the house has a fountain stately stone balustrade.
As it turns out this isn’t the first time the Schrifts have attempted to sell their house in the Hollywood Dell; In the fall of 2014 they briefly had it for sale at $1.795 million.
