RENTER: Mariah Carey
LOCATION: Malibu, Calif.
PRICE: $10,000 per night
SIZE: 3,734 square feet, 4 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms
YOUR MAMA’S NOTES: While on hiatus from her part-time and no doubt astronomically lucrative performance residency at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, veteran pop phenom Mariah Carey will bunk down, according to Page Six of the New York Post, in a $30 million beachfront residence on Malibu’s swanky Carbon Beach listed on Airbnb as a luxury short-term rental at a mend-melting of $10,000 per night. The story goes that Miz Carey and her kids will shack up in the Bu with her Australian billionaire boyfriend James Packer — a successful businessman and heir to a great media empire — until she heads out for an August 18 concert just outside Tel Aviv, Israel.
Property records show the vaguely Mediterranean-style house is owned by entertainment industry executive Michael Lambert, who helped get the Showtime and Lifetime cable networks off the ground before he became a bigwig at 20th Century Fox and later founded Lambert Media Group. Airbnb listing details show the walled, gated and presumably tightly secured residence has a total of four bedrooms and four bathrooms. There are two guest/family bedrooms on the main floor, a separate two-room guesthouse that overlooks a lushly landscaped central courtyard, and a celebrity-sized master suite on the upper floor replete with sitting area with fireplace, separate office/boudoir, steam shower equipped bathroom and a private balcony with views up and down the beach — not to mention directly into David Geffen’s beachside backyard. The massive main living space is open plan and plenty large enough for the Cannon-Cary kids to ride their bikes indoors if they so choose and includes a lounge with fireplace, a second lounge with full bar, a dining room with another fireplace and a well-equipped if somewhat dated-looking kitchen with butcher block topped center island snack bar. There’s a grotto-ish indoor/outdoor spa room and French doors set into a fancifully scalloped niche in the main living area open to a stone-tiled terrace that spans the width of the residence. Should Mariah care to bounce down the beach in an itty-bitty string bikini, she could pop by on some of her high-powered neighbors who, in addition to David Geffen, include Joel Silver, Jamie McCourt, Jeffrey Katzenberg, Peter Morton, Larry Ellison, Les Moonves, and Eli Broad.
Miz Carey, who has sold more than 200 million records worldwide and has five Grammys, 20 American Music Awards and 21 World Music Awards, and her soon-to-be ex-husband Nick Cannon unloaded their sprawling mansion just off Mulholland Drive high above L.A.’s Bel Air just this last March for $9 million — they bought it in 2009 for $6.975 million — and, at least as far as this property gossip knows, the famously curvaceous pop icon still owns a nearly 13,000-square-foot penthouse in New York City’s Tribeca that she has all did up by chintz king Mario Buatta and photographed for Architectural Digest as well as a beachfront compound on the guard-gated and hyper-exclusive Windermere Island in the Bahamas.
(P.S. If Miz Carey and/or Mister Packer become smitten with their oceanside location and think they might like a piece of the Carbon Beach pie, they can always ring up David Geffen who — we’ve now heard from several well-connected real estate insiders — will allow his compound to be shown on the down low to pre-qualified buyers who don’t faint at the much-whispered-about $100 million asking price.)
