SIZE: 1,765 square feet, 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms
YOUR MAMA’S NOTES: Amid a smattering of not particularly flattering reports that Leonardo DiCaprio’s eponymous and unusually structured charitable foundation is tangentially linked to a multi-billion dollar embezzlement scheme, the high-powered A-list actor listed a contemporary beach-front cottage on Malibu’s coveted Carbon Beach with an asking price of $10.95 million. Property records and other online resources show Mister DiCaprio, who after five previous nominations finally took home an Oscar this year for his action-packed turn as a thickly bearded bear fighting fur trader in “The Revenant,” paid $1.6 million for the property in September 1998, shortly after his superstar-making role in the multi-billion dollar blockbuster “Titanic.” This property gossip has long heard through the celebrity property gossip grapevine the house in question was occupied, at least on a part-time basis, by the actor’s mother, Ermelin, and over the last handful of years the house was several times set out for lease, including last spring when it popped up as a summer rental with a skin-peeling price tag of $50,000 per month.
Current marketing materials describe the 1,765-square-foot two-story residence as “Meticulously renovated” with three bedrooms and two bathrooms. A gated courtyard at the front can be used for entertaining or off-street parking — there’s also a single car garage — and bleached blond hardwoods run throughout open-plan living spaces that encompass a living room with stone-faced and television surmounted fireplace, a dining area with wood-framed glass sliders to an ocean-side deck, and a small, expensively outfitted galley kitchen where seal grey back splash tiles set in a decoratively dernier cri herringbone pattern extend all the way to the ceiling. Both ocean-facing bedrooms on the upper floor have sitting areas with built-in media equipment along with wood-framed glass sliders that open to a slender balcony with panoramic ocean and coastline views. A glass-railed deck outside the living/dining room provides plenty of room for al fresco lounging, dining and sunbathing along with a partly sunken spa and a private stairway to the beach.
The model-dating actor and producer, listed as a producer on a handful of upcoming projects including the crime-drama “Live by Night” written by and starring Ben Affleck, previously owned at least two other homes in Malibu, one he sold in 2009 for $7.4 million and another he shed in the latter days of 2013 for $17.35 million. His current residential holdings in Southern California include a gated, city-view contemporary perched high in the Bird Streets neighborhood above the Sunset Strip along with the much more traditional house next door. He also owns a probably luxuriously appointed but relatively unassuming Spanish residence in the hipster-chic Silver Lake area as well as a unequivocally spectacular mid-century modern in Palm Springs that he picked up in February 2014 for $5.23 million. Unsurprisingly for a man with his financial resources — he reportedly rakes in more than $25 million per film and presides over a net worth that by some estimates exceeds $200 million — the L.A. born and bred actor also maintains an impressive real estate foothold in New York City where, according to our research, he owns at least three multi-million dollar apartments in lower Manhattan. In addition to a 3,663-square-foot three-bedroom and 2.5-bathroom unit in an eco-conscious boutique building in Greenwich Village that he scooped up in May 2014 for $10 million he also maintains two units that together have just over 5,000-square-feet in a eco-friendly luxury complex in the Battery Park area, the first he bought in October 2008 for $3.6 million and the other he snapped up in January 2014 for $8 million.
