YOUR MAMA’S NOTES: Judd Apatow and Leslie Mann sold their Malibu beach house, a thoroughly updated 1930s cottage inside the guarded gates of the fabled and historically celebrified Colony enclave, for $11.5 million. The buyer, according to property records we peeped at, was high-powered First Amendment championing attorney Theodore “Ted” Boutrous Junior. Online marketing materials indicate the white-shuttered and blue stucco two-story residence measures in at a humble but not exactly puny 2,550 square feet with three bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms. The prolific writer-producer, a heavyweight in Hollywood regardless of whether one appreciates his characteristically idiosyncratic and earnestly satirical take on romance and relationships, and the actress, who not infrequently pops up in her husband’s projects and co-stars in the bawdy yet flaccidly reviewed sex comedy “How to Be Single,” purchased the property in June 2013 for $11.85 million from late “Pretty Woman” and “Spider-Man” franchise producer Laura Ziskin.
A secured gate next to a detached two-car garage opens to a shady, wind-protected courtyard. Though this property gossip adores a Dutch style door, we don’t care so much for this one, which to our mild dismay opens directly and, hence, awkwardly into a combination kitchen and media lounge that overlooks the front courtyard. Gleaming, white-painted wood floors extend into a much more commodious combination living and dining room anchored on opposite walls by a pair of white brick fireplaces, one of them much more imposingly massed than the other. An adjoining sunroom lined along two walls with built-in cushioned banquettes opens to a bi-level deck with direct beach access and sweeping coastline views over the ocean from Point Dume to Catalina Island. A curlicue staircase links the lower deck to a large, L-shaped terrace outside of the master bedroom that spans the full width of the house and includes another fireplace and compact bathroom with marble-topped vanity and white tile lined shower.
The Colony has long attracted a who’s who of business sorts, and its current crop of homeowners include Jason Statham; Rob Reiner; Pam Anderson; Sting, who bought his adobe-style abode from Larry Hagman; and Tom Hanks who actually owns two homes, one on the beach the other directly across the street.
Even with the sale of their relatively low-key if premium priced Malibu getaway, Mister Apatow and Miz Mann, married nearly 20 years, continue to maintain a small but impressive portfolio of pricey properties in both Los Angeles and New York. In the Brentwood area of L.A. they reside in a stately mansion of more than 10,000 square feet acquired in mid-2009 for $18.25 million and on the East Coast the couple keeps a three-bedroom and 3.5 bathroom pied-a-terre they scooped up in April 2013 for a few dollars more than $9.418 million and is located in the same 10-unit boutique building in Manhattan’s West Village where contemporary art hoovering hedge fund fat cat Steve Cohen shelled out $23.4 million in July 2013 for the building’s 9,600-square-foot triplex maisonette.
