SELLER: Jimmy Kimmel
LOCATION: Los Angeles, CA
PRICE: $2,299,000
SIZE: 3,605 square feet, 5 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms
YOUR MAMA’S NOTES: Although he hasn’t actually inhabited the place for half a decade, a modern-minded 1940s traditional in the Hollywood Hills owned by comedian, actor and late night chat fest host Jimmy Kimmel has come up for sale with an asking price of $2,299,000.
Mister Kimmel acquired the property near the tippy-top of the hilly, historic and mildly celebrified Hollywood Knolls neighborhood in February 2002 for $925,000 and he occupied the 3,605-square foot house for a number of years with ex-girlfriend Sarah Silverman. Since 2009, when he decamped to a very contemporary Sunset Strip compound he picked up in December 2008 for $6 million the property was used as a rental. (We can’t say if anyone notable leased the property but Your Mama did find digital evidence the house was listed for lease on the open market in April 2012 at $6,900 per month.)
Set high and privately above the street, the 1940’s two-story traditional has five bedrooms, five bathrooms in 3,605 square feet. Interior and exterior paint schemes were conceived by “Flipping Out” star Jeff Lewis and there are a dozen flat-screen televisions throughout the house. That’s right, children, a person could not swing a cat or anything else without banging in to one of the twelve televisions. (Is anyone besides Your Mama flabbergasted to the point of needing a stiff gin & tonic at just the thought of twelve televisions in one house? No? Anyways…)
It’s a long hike up a red brick stairway from the street level parking area — there’s also a two car garage is accessible via a private lane at the rear — to the pedimented center hall entry. Honey blond wood floors continue in to the step up formal dining room as well as the step-down living room where a floor-to-ceiling leaded glass bay window has through the trees canyon and valley views.
Mister Kimmel, a dedicated gourmand, had the kitchen custom designed to his specifications with a slew of cookery bells and whistles that include a dedicated dessert fridge, ice maker, full-height wine fridge and soda dispenser. An adjoining dining banquette has a huge table that can be raised and lowered electronically and easily seats eight or ten. There’s a built-in entertainment unit with — natch — a large flat-screen television and a wet bar with an electronically operable window opens to the backyard entertainment areas.
One of the four guest/family bedrooms was decked out by Mister Kimmel as a recording studio with padded walls, built-in desk and cabinetry and voice booth where Mister Kimmel conducted on-air interviews. The other two guest/family bedrooms both have office nooks and renovated en suite facilities sheathed in colorful glass tiles. The master suite isn’t particularly large but is nicely outfitted with a bevy of built-in wardrobes, French doors that open to a wrought-iron railed Juliet balcony and — You got it, kids! — a ceiling mounted television. The many-windowed master bathroom has an extra-long vanity with twin vessel sinks, a soaking tub set Japanese-style on a raised wood platform, and an over-sized, glass-shielded shower space.
The handful of roomy outdoor living and entertainment areas include a brick terrace just off the kitchen/breakfast area with an outdoor kitchen fully equipped with built-in barbecue, wood burning pizza oven, smoker and beer keg dispenser. A large, tree-shaded deck off the living room with sunken spa overlooks a lower terrace with pill-shaped pool.
Mister Kimmel — married to and making babies with Molly McNearny, a two-time Emmy nominee and former co-head writer for Jimmy Kimmel Live! — also owns the much more modest house next door to his contempo compound above the Sunset Strip that he picked up in October 2010 for $1.1 million as well as a duplex property in Hermosa Beach that’s just about a block from the sand and was purchased, as per our research, in May 2004 for $1.65 million.
