YOUR MAMA’S NOTES: Now that she’s settled into Leonard Bernstein’s former apartment at the legendary Osbourne building across from Carnegie Hall in Midtown Manhattan, famously flame-tressed actress Jessica Chastain has set her old digs, a custom-designed duplex in a full-service, pre-war complex at the busy intersection of the Greenwich Village, NoHo and SoHo nabes, out for lease at $11,500 per month.
Property records show the classically trained Julliard graduate — a Golden Globe winning two-time Oscar nominee — purchased the two-bedroom and two-bathroom condo in September 2012 for $1.2 million and current listing details show the “impeccably renovated” duplex has high ceilings — 10.5 feet on the lower floor and 11 feet upstairs, herringbone pattern wood floors, an uncomfortably suburban feeling stacked stone fireplace, and an entertainment system “discretely positioned” behind a floor-to-ceiling curtain in the living room that incorporates a 65-inch flat screen television. The front door opens, essentially and less than ideally, directly into the combination kitchen/dining space that features black and white birch tree trunk pattern wallpaper in the dining area and a mix of granite and butcher block counter tops plus a full-complement of shiny stainless steel appliances in the unusually roomy by Manhattan standards center-island kitchen. The floor plan shows a convenient if not particularly private bathroom on the main floor between the dining and living rooms. A tightly spiraled open tread floating staircase — a twisting, wood-constructed situation we can’t recommend anyone navigate after a boozy evening — curls up to a sky-lit and bedroom flanked landing. The master bedroom, with a trio of arched, north-facing windows, has a small dressing area and a roomy cedar-lined walk-in closet while the smaller bedroom has a smaller dressing area and a smaller cedar-lined walk-in closet. The bedrooms share a spacious, girlish-glam bathroom with marble floor, judges paneling, a glimmering crystal chandelier over a silver-sided soaking tub, a separate stall shower, and a cubicle for the toilet with built-in linen cabinet.
Miss Chastain’s new Midtown apartment, which she bought with her handsome boyfriend, Italian noble and fashion executive Gian Luca Passi de Preposulo, is far more grand than her downtown duplex and cost the comely couple a princely $5.1 million. The rambling, nine-room split-level spread encompasses about 3,200-square-feet with three or four bedrooms, depending on what one counts as a bedroom, 3.5 bathrooms, five fireplaces, a 32-foot long double parlor, separate dining room, eat-in kitchen and an impressive bevy of meticulously restored and/or recreated architectural finishes and flourishes.
