The longtime L.A. home of the late, great Emmy-winning actress and comedienne Bea Arthur has been sold for close to $15 million, and the new owners — we first caught wind from the fellas at Celebrity Address Aerial and later had confirmed by avid celebrity real estate snitch Lucy Spillerguts — are powerful, prolific and property-mad producers Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall. The nearly four-acre estate, reportedly occupied by the legendary “Maude” and “Golden Girls” star from the mid-1970s until her 2009 death, was extensively renovated in the mid-2000s and listed for lease a couple of years ago at a staggering $60,000 per month. It was later listed at a significantly lower but still knee-buckling $32,500 per month.
Tucked into the secluded back of sylvan Sullivan Canyon, the sprawling, 7,000-plus square-foot hacienda-style abode was originally designed by iconic California architect Cliff May, and is currently configured with five bedrooms, six bathrooms and two offices. Stone-tiled formal living and dining rooms are joined by a media room and an open-plan kitchen/family room that spills out through French doors to a swimming pool and spa surrounded by flagstone terracing. The gated grounds include a 10-car motor court, tennis court and trails that wind past waterfalls and lead to scenic overlooks.
The Kennedy-Marshalls, who have more than a dozen Oscar nominations between them, are celebrity property column staples: In 2010, they sold an uber-modern mansion in Pacific Palisades for $26 million to Tom Hanks; in 2012 they paid Reese Witherspoon $7.5 million for a vacant parcel in Mandeville Canyon previously owned by Tom Selleck and Steven Seagal, which they dumped less than two years later at a profit. Earlier this year, they shelled out $9.75 million for an ocean view contemporary in Malibu.
