YOUR MAMA’S NOTES: It seems that loads of rich and famous people have put their multimillion-dollar homes up for lease this week. Pauly Shore’s Hollywood Hills house was set out with a $27,500 per month price, and the Facebook-suing Winklevoss twins have made their über-modern pile above the Sunset Strip available at $150,000 per month. Next up, actor-director-producer and outspoken lefty activist Rob Reiner has his Cape Cod-style getaway in the coveted, guard-gated Malibu Colony enclave up for lease — for July only — at $100,000 for the month. As was noted by the property gossips at the L.A. Times, Mister Reiner listed the property for lease last summer at $110,000 for the month of July and the previous summer at a substantially higher $150,000.
Property records suggest the Hollywood scion — his poppa is nine-time Emmy-winning comedian-writer-producer Carl Reiner — and two-time Emmy winner — he was also nominated for an Oscar in 1992 for “A Few Good Men” — purchased the circa 1928 beachfront residence in early 1994 for an unrecorded amount, and current listing details put the fully updated, gray clapboard-sided residence at 2,755 square feet with five bedrooms and half a dozen bathrooms.
Blonde wood floors run throughout the interconnected main floor living spaces, which include a sky-lit living room with fireplace and exposed beam ceiling, a sunroom/lounge with vaulted exposed beam ceiling and a dining area open to a center-island kitchen with industrial-grade range and wood counter countertops. A sculptural, corkscrew staircase in the main living area leads to the second floor bedrooms that include an ocean-view master suite with sitting area; sky-lit and ceramic-tiled bathroom with double-sink vanity, spa tub and separate glass-enclosed shower; and private, glass-railed deck with over the rooftop whitewater view.
Glass sliders in the living room and adjoining sunroom/lounge open to a deck chock-a-block with potted plants, wicker patio furniture and equipped with a free-standing, molded plastic spa tub. A glass railing and a few steps separate the spa/lounge deck from second, slightly elevated deck with dining table, sun loungers and direct beach access.
The Colony enclave has long been a draw to showbiz types. Charlie Chaplin and Mary Pickford were early inhabitants, as was Bing Crosby. Linda Rondstadt rented in the ’70s, when she was coupled up with California Gov. Jerry Brown, Neil Diamond was a long-time homeowner, and Larry Hagman, who eventually sold his house to Sting, cultivated a few marijuana plants in his yard. Leo DiCaprio rented the Hagman/Sting house before he bought — and then sold — a multiresidence compound just outside the gates of Malibu Colony, and Tom Hanks owns two houses inside the gates, one on the beach and another directly across the street. Jason Statham spent almost $11 million on his ocean front digs back in 2009, and the following year shabby chic queen Rachel Ashwell sold her land-side cottage — leased in 2007 to pop star Britney Spears after she kicked ol’ Whathisface Federline to the curb — for $3.5 million to Peri Gilpin, who turned around and sold it in 2013 for $4.25 million to a New York City-based octogenarian venture capitalist and private equity pioneer with a couple of sons in the movie business.
Our research reveals Mister Reiner continues to own a gated, corner compound hidden behind high hedges and a towering wall of shrubbery in the Brentwood area that he’s owned since the early 1990s, when he picked it up for $4.75 million.
