YOUR MAMA’S NOTES: Demi Moore seems to have had a big ol’ real estate reality check because she recently and dramatically slashed the asking price of her triplex penthouse atop the legendary San Remo building in New York City from its in-hindsight wildly utopian original asking price of $75 million all the way down to $59 million. Despite the gargantuan $16 million chop, the penthouse’s new price is still more than twice the amount of the building’s highest recorded sale, a 6,150-square-foot, park-facing combination unit on the sixth floor with five bedrooms and six bathrooms that went in August 2014 for $26.4 million. Miz Moore also owns a two bedroom and two bathroom maisonette apartment with private entrances from both the street and the lobby that was previously included in the $75 million asking price but current listing details show is now available for purchase separately at an additional but undisclosed cost.
Miz Moore and her second ex-husband, 61-year old action flick stalwart Bruce Willis, bought the approximately 7,000-square-foot penthouse in 1990 from “Saturday Night Fever” producer Robert Stigwood and current online marketing materials show the suburban mansion-sized, six bedroom and 5.5 bathroom urban aerie carries sky-high monthly common charges of $17,912. A private elevator vestibule leads to a double height foyer with tightly balustered Mission-style staircase that makes a curvaceous sweep up to private family quarters on the second floor. Custom cherry wood Mission-style pocket doors open to a nearly 800-square-foot living room that soars above the city with three exposures and 22-feet of direct park frontage. There’s also a formal dining room and a corner library with original plaster rosette ceiling medallion along with an extensively equipped kitchen and breakfast room. Five family bedrooms are joined by a staff suite on the second floor while the uppermost floor encompasses a wood-paneled entertainment room/media lounge with 16-foot ceiling, glass doors to the terrace and, a wrap-around mezzanine with sleeping loft, bathroom and kitchenette. The penthouse’s approximately 1,500-square-foot private terrace provides spine-tinglingly panoramic river, park and skyline views.
The San Remo, designed by architect Emery Roth and built in 1930, stretches from West 74th to West 75th Street along Central Park West as it topped by two ten-story towers, each capped by a circular Roman temple structure. Although the building’s board famously rejected a bid by Madonna to buy a $1.2 million, three-bedroom spread in 1985, the building has a long history of high-profile residents from the entertainment industry. A short list of the many past and present residents includes: Steve Martin, Steven Spielberg, Stephen Sondheim, Dustin Hoffman, Glenn Close, Tony Randall, Diane Keaton, Hedy Lamarr, and Rita Hayworth. Apple visionary Steve Jobs once bought and renovated but never moved in to a penthouse unit in the north tower — Moore’s occupies the south tower — that he eventually sold for about $14.5 million to Bono who, in 2007, got into a bit of a kerfuffle with neighbor, musician Billy Squier, over fireplace smoke that drifted into the penthouse. But we digress….
In addition to her mansion-sized Manhattan penthouse and a fair number of properties in and around Hailey, Idaho, green-eyed and husky-voiced Miz Moore continues to own a contemporary, canyon-view residence along a celebrity-lined street in the Beverly Hills Post Office area that she scooped up in July 2003 for $3.15 million. While still married to her third husband, actor and investor Ashton Kutcher, she had the house worked over by celebrated interior designer Brad Dunning and photographed for the March 2007 issue of Architectural Digest.
