YOUR MAMA’S NOTES: Just as we first heard from plugged-in Platinum Triangle real estate mover and shaker Peter Propertyseller, actor and oil heir Balthazar Getty (“Brothers & Sisters”) has put his extensively rehabbed contemporary compound near the top of L.A.’s Nichols Canyon on the market with an asking price of $10.5 million. Property records and other online resources indicate Mister Getty and his fashion-designer wife, Rosette Millington, acquired the ridgeline compound in July 2003 for $2.15 million.
Online marketing materials show the gated and heavily fortified two-structure compound includes a two-story main house with six en suite bedrooms, six full and three half bathrooms, living room with fireplace, open kitchen/dining room and a separate media room. A sizable, single-story detached guesthouse/studio provides four more flexible use spaces and two more bathrooms. Massive banks of floor-to-ceiling windows in both the main and guesthouse slip in to the walls and link to the property’s multiple terraces, fire pits, desert gardens and swimming pool.
The Getty family, which presides over a fortune estimated to be in the neighborhood of $5 billion, maintains a strong and storied presence on the SoCal real estate scene, quietly and sometimes not so quietly buying and selling multimillion-dollar houses like Monopoly pieces. Two years ago, Aileen Getty, one of Balthazar’s aunties, sold her two-house compound at the top of L.A.’s Runyon Canyon for $11.2 million to maturing pop princess Katy Perry. (One house was previously owned by Walmart heiress Sybil Robson Orr and the other by Bruce Springsteen’s longtime E Street Band drummer Max Weinberg.) Last fall, John Gilbert Getty — he would be Balthazar’s first cousin, once removed — sold a mansion in Los Feliz that was previously home to Bob Dylan, Andy Warhol, Lou Reed and Michael “Flea” Balzary for $8.3 million; and just last month, Ariadne Getty, another of Bathazar’s aunties, surreptitiously shoveled out $7 million for a Toluca Lake mansion sold by Miley Cyrus.
