SELLER: Dr. Dre and Nicole Threatt
LOCATION: Los Angeles, Calif.
PRICE: $35,000,000
SIZE: 9,696 square feet, 6 bedrooms, 9 bathrooms
YOUR MAMA’S NOTES: Now that music industry mogul Dr. Dre has done dropped an eye-popping $40 million on Giselle Bundchen and Tom Brady’s custom-constructed 18,000-plus square foot faux-French chateau in the Brentwood area of Los Angeles, the veteran music industry mogul and high-priced earphone tycoon has hoisted his significantly smaller but still humongous Sunset Strip mansion on the open market with an asking price of $35 million. (If the children recall, Your Mama let the cat out of the real estate bag that this was all gonna go down way back in late April. Remember? Anyhoo…)
Mister Dr. Dre, né Andre Romelle Young, and his (second) wife, Nicole Threatt, purchased the impressively scaled and certainly luxurious but architecturally vague 9,696 square foot Sunset Strip mansion, according to property records, in the latter days of 2011 for $15,400,000. This property gossip freely confesses we don’t have a damn clue what, if any, alterations and/or improvements the Dre-Threatts made or didn’t make to the property but it does not take a mathematical savant to figure out that the $35 million asking price tag is an arguably audacious two-and-a-quarter times more than they paid for the place just 2.5 years ago.
Set high and prominently on a gated and no doubt ferociously well-fortified promontory in the so-called Bird Streets nabe above the Sunset Strip, the 9,696 square foot mansion was completely re-built in 2001. Current listing details indicate there are a total of six bedrooms and nine bathrooms, a count that may or may not include accommodations in the staff quarters and/or guest house. Other interior creature comforts and luxuries include at least five fireplaces, an impress-the-guests style double-height entry, formal living and dining rooms, a library/media room, den, and a wine cellar.
The rear of the residence opens through large expanses of glass to a series of loggias and terraces that step down to a T-shaped negative edge swimming pool and spa. The property’s elevated perch allows for an honest-to-goodness panoramic view that sweeps over a monstrous swath of Los Angeles from the knot of towers that comprise downtown to — on a clear day — the sun-shimmered Pacific Ocean.
The Bird Streets —where all the streets are, as you may already know or have guessed, are named after birds — have long been popular with the rich and famous. Dr. Dre and Miz Threatt’s home boasts a bevy of notable nearby neighbors who include acrimoniously divorcing 30-something year old Walmart heiress Paige Laurie, somewhat mysterious 30-something year old Malaysian billionaire/investor/philanthropist and occasional party boy Jho Low, and five-time Oscar-nominated superstar actor Leonardo DiCaprio.
Besides his well-earned place in the music industry pantheon and his runaway successful Beats earphone empire that he is selling to Apple for an $3 billion — that’s right, three billion George Washingtons — Mister Dr. Dre is also, as it turns out, a nascent real estate baller. In addition to the newly acquired $40 million Brentwood estate and the Sunset Strip manse currently on the open market for $35 million, the good Dr. and his wife own (at least) a couple other impressively-sized homes in the Los Angeles area that include a nearly 14,000 square foot manse in guard-gated development in Woodland Hills that they picked up in May 1999 for $2.375 million.
In the fall of 2010 Mister and Missus Dr. Dre shelled out $4.75 million for an 8,800-plus square foot ocean front mansion on Malibu’s super-swish Carbon Beach that they unsuccessfully attempted to flip in 2011 and 2012 for with an original asking price of $11 million that was later puffed up to $12.5 million. In October 2012, nearly a year after they picked up the Sunset Strip mansion they now have up for sale, the good Dr. and his wife paid $10.5 million for a pair of vacant, multi-acre parcels in the affluent, guard-gated and horse-friendly Hidden Hills enclave where other celebrity homeowners include Jessica Simpson, Jennifer Lopez, LeeAnn Rimes (with Eddie Cibrian), and Kardashian family mega-momager Kris Jenner.
