High in the mountains above Beverly Hills lies a large tennis court estate long owned by Paula Fortunato, the former New York schoolteacher best-known as the second and final ex-wife of now-deceased Viacom media mogul Sumner Redstone, to whom she was married from 2002 until 2009.
Fortunato bought the property in 2008 for $4.2 million, records reveal, right as her marriage to Redstone was disintegrating. In recent years, however, Fortunato is believed to have rekindled her friendship with Redstone, who lived nearby in the guard-gated Beverly Park community. Shortly after his August 2020 death, Fortunato put her 90210 home up for grabs; the property quickly sold for $8 million in cash to Susilo Wonowidjojo, one of Indonesia’s wealthiest men. (His company, Gudang Garam, produced 96 billion cigarettes in 2019 alone.)
Wonowidjojo, who resides primarily in Jakarta and Singapore, purchased the lavish mansion for his daughter, an L.A.-based CG artist and USC grad in her early 30s.
In contrast to other L.A. homes at this price point, many of which are either white modern boxes or snazzy “modern farmhouses” with all-neutral interiors, the former Fortunato house is a 1990s French Country-inspired villa with a distinct mountain lodge vibe, the sort of thing you might find in Jackson Hole or Sun Valley. Inside are colorful details like rich wood trim and ceiling beams, red brick walls, and distressed hardwood floors.
An oversized brick fireplace warms the living room, as does a matching fireplace in the formal dining room, which opens via wood-trimmed French doors to the backyard. While quite dated, the kitchen certainly makes a style statement with its rustic luxe vibe — there’s enough wood in that room to fill a lumber yard or two — and includes a subway tile-topped island with bar seating.
Other spaces include a lounge/games room with another brick fireplace, a library, an upstairs master suite with a sitting area, fireplace, and spa-style bath, plus a three-car attached garage secured behind wrought iron gates.
The hillside property’s grounds are nothing if not fairytale-like and begin out front, where there’s are two sloped long ringed by rose bushes and bisected by a brick staircase leading to the front door. Crepe myrtles, towering Italian cypresses and flowering vines hide much of the house from public view; out back, the 1.35-acre lot impresses with a large flat lawn and a lagoon-inspired swimming pool, which is set directly below mature evergreen trees for shade and maximum privacy. The oddly shaped lot also has the full-size tennis court set far out of sight from the house, down a long pathway, set directly above a neighbor’s mansion.
Young Miss Wonowidjojo will likely enjoy the quiet solitude of her new 90210 compound, which is located on a quiet cul-de-sac in the hills. Some of her nearest new neighbors include Vin Diesel, Kate Upton, Gene Simmons and Cameron Diaz, who recently shelled out $14.7 million for a compound right around the corner.
Ernie Carswell and Christopher Pickett of Douglas Elliman held the listing; Suzanna Abovyan of PLG Estates repped Wonowidjojo.
