‘How I Met Your Mother’ Creator Seeks $9 Million for Stately La Cañada Estate

After barely three years of ownership, veteran entertainment industry executive Carter Bays has decided to part ways with his sprawling compound in the leafy Los Angeles suburb of La Cañada Flintridge. The TV showrunner — probably still best known as co-creator of “How I Met Your Mother” — and his wife Denise are asking just under $9 million, or $2 million over what they paid for the place back in summer 2020.

Sited on just over 2 acres in the exclusive Meadow Grove neighborhood, and designed in the 1920s by noted architect Myron Hunt of Rose Bowl and Huntington Library fame, the property features a Colonial-style main house, plus a guest apartment atop the detached four-car garage — for a total of five bedrooms and a matching number of baths in a little more than 9,100 square feet of living space adorned throughout with a mix of tile and quarter-sawn oak floors.

As for the primary residence, the two-story structure is hidden away behind a circular driveway that empties out at a spacious motorcourt. Inside, an entry foyer displaying a curving staircase flows to a wood-paneled library, as well as formal living and dining rooms. There’s also a gourmet kitchen outfitted with an eat-in island, stainless Miele and Viking appliances, a vintage range and the original kitchen that’s now being used as a butler’s pantry, and a family/game room sporting a custom wet bar and casual dining nook.

A spiral staircase in the family room heads upstairs, where the master retreat boasts a private balcony, walk-in closet, separate office space, and luxe bath equipped with dual vanities and a spa tub; and elsewhere is a sitting room and wine cellar. Outdoors, the resort-like grounds are dotted with mature oak trees, walking trails, fountains and ponds, and contain a pool and spa, barbecue and kitchen setup, dining amphitheater and tennis court with viewing area.
