Though they divorced in 2019, after almost 30 years of marriage, the Hollywood Hills estate where “Mad Men” showrunner Matthew Weiner and his architect wife Linda Brettler long lived has finally become available for sale. The decadent spread, undeniably stunning and packing major visual drama, is listed at a smidge under $15.5 million.
The couple acquired the property from former talk show host Leeza Gibbons way back in summer 2010, for just under $5 million. Set behind a lengthy gated driveway and dense foliage, and known as the “Blair Estate,” the 1-acre property is described in the listing as “one of the most legendary estates in Hollywood,” and features seven bedrooms and eight baths sprawled across three levels offering more than 11,000 square feet of living space rife with period details.
Originally designed by noted architect George H. Fruehling, and extensively renovated and restored by Brettler herself, the creamy stucco and terracotta-roof structure was first owned by prominent Los Angeles developer John H. Blair. Two years after it was built, the place was featured in a 1926 “Architectural Digest” issue and later appeared in the pages of Luxe Interiors + Design.
Main-level highlights include a fireside living room resting beneath a hand-painted coffered ceiling, formal dining room, and gourmet kitchen outfitted with marble countertops, an eat-in island and high-end stainless appliances. Elsewhere in the house are an upstairs master retreat with a private balcony and three additional guest bedrooms, plus a lower level sporting more bedrooms, game and wine rooms, an opulent movie theater, a second kitchen and wet bar-equipped loggia.
The amenities continue out back, where the grounds are laced with mature trees, grassy lawns and meandering pathways, and host a pool, grotto, koi pond, and plenty of spots ideal for al fresco lounging and entertaining. There’s also an attached four-car garage, along with a three-story guesthouse that’s currently occupied by an office and a gym.
Of course, the erstwhile couple long ago went their separate real estate ways. Weiner appears to have remained in the Blair estate, while Brettler picked up a stunning Raphael S. Soriano-designed midcentury house in Studio City.
