Best known for his portrayal of fictional A-list movie star Vincent Chase, who was managed by caustic talent agent Ari Gold, during the years Adrian Grenier starred on the 2000s series “Entourage,” 2004-2011, he also played drums in a not particularly well known indie rock band, The Honey Brothers, with a real-life Ari Gold, although this one isn’t a ruthless Hollywood deal maker but rather a much more easy-going musician, actor and filmmaker.
No household name in the vein of Hollywood heavy hitters like Steven Spielberg or Michael Bay, Gold may best be known among indie cinephiles for his 2018 lyrical romantic drama “The Song of Sway Lake,” which screened at more than 50 international film festivals, and his 2008 cult-classic film about air drumming, “Adventures of Power.” The subject of the latter film was very near and dear to Gold’s air-drumming heart as he’s a Guinness World Record holder for conducting the largest air drum ensemble ever assembled!
Born into a creative family, Gold’s father is nonagenarian novelist Herbert Gold, an enduring mandarin of the San Francisco literary scene, and his late mother, Melissa Dilworth Gold, was involved with concert promoter Bill Graham and in fact died with Graham in a 1991 helicopter crash. The tragic accident became the subject of Gold’s first short film (“Helicopter”), which was awarded a 2000 Student Academy Award Oscar.
For the last decade or so, Gold has made his L.A. base an updated 1920s California bungalow in L.A.’s artsy and ever-more spendy Silver Lake neighborhood. Bought in 2012 for $700,000, the two-bedroom and two-bath home is now back on the market at a smidgen below $1.7 million. Hidden among the treetops and invisible from the street, the updated California bungalow borders one of the many “hidden” staircases that connect their hillside homes to transit stops and shops.
Humble in size, with not even 1,200 square feet, the bungalow’s great room showcases vaulted redwood and pine ceilings, cherry wood doors, and newly refinished wood floors. New-fangled features include an integrated sound system and a roomy kitchen fitted with designer appliances. The guest bedroom opens to a deck, while the main bedroom has a private bath bathed in natural light that pours in from a skylight over the tub.
The home’s ample, invitingly private outdoor spaces, combined with L.A.’s temperate climate, more than make up for any interior square footage shortfall. At the top of the long stairway that climbs the steep slope from the street-level carport to the home’s entry, a broad deck meanders beneath the leaves and branches of mature trees strung with lights. And behind the house, at the top of another staircase, there’s a roomy terrace notched into the hillside, with pretty, tree-framed sunset views. A cabana easily serves as a writer’s retreat or yoga/meditation studio, while purple lights add a theatrical flourish to a hot tub with a view of the Hollywood sign.
