Michael D. Ratner has made a name for himself directing and producing branded content for some of the biggest celebs on the planet — filming Kevin Hart in a tub full of ice for the comedian/actor’s LOL Network and chronicling the tumultuous life of Demi Lovato via a docuseries, and that’s just for starters. Recently signed to talent juggernaut CAA — along with the Emmy-winning OBB Media production studio he formed in 2016 — the successful producer is upgrading from petite West Hollywood digs to a ritzy gated estate in the steep mountains above Beverly Hills.
Property records reveal Ratner sold his two-bedroom, two-bath WeHo apartment for $1.5 million and immediately doled out $5.4 million for his new 90210 home, originally listed for $5.8 million. Weighing in at just over 4,000 square feet with six ensuite bedrooms, the two-story house was built way back in 1955 but has since undergone a comprehensive contemporary revamp, and rests on a 0.36-acre parcel just a quick jaunt to both the iconic Beverly Hills Hotel and Franklin Canyon Park.
Set back from the street, and fronted by a motorcourt and attached two-car garage, the structure was described as an “elegant Hamptons estate” in the listing, and boasts an off-white stucco and brick facade. Steps lead up to steel-framed front doors, which open into an entry foyer adorned with a decorative red chandelier. From there, a fireside living room sports a vaulted skylit ceiling, towering built-in bookshelves and a stylish wet bar. Pocketing glass doors spill out onto an al fresco dining and entertaining terrace, which holds a firepit and wood-paneled seating area.
Around the corner is a cozy family room with French doors that open to the backyard; there’s also a gourmet kitchen outfitted with a spacious marble-topped island, Wolf appliances, shaker-style cabinetry and a breakfast nook with a built-in banquette. Also on the lower level is a chic paneled formal dining room adorned with an artsy Italian marble wine display for over 250 bottles, as well as a media/game room.
Upstairs, one of two master suites in the residence is highlighted by a spa-like bath equipped with dual vanities, a soaking tub and walk-in shower, plus French doors that open to a latticed balcony. As for the private backyard, you’ll find a grassy lawn flanked by a half-court basketball setup and built-in Viking barbecue on one side, and a large pool and spa with a sundeck on the other.
Ratner, also a prolific music video director, is OBB Media’s founder and CEO. He leads the creative team on its projects, which include the recent premiere on Amazon of the feature concert documentary “Justin Bieber: Our World.” Other OBB projects include the Netflix comedy series “Historical Roasts,” along with Kevin Hart’s “Cold as Balls” and the Demi Lovato piece that opened this year’s SXSW Film Festival.
Shawn Shirdel of Sotheby’s International Realty served as the listing agent; Ratner was repped by Steven Schaefer and Jay Luchs of Newmark Residential.
