Though not as fashionable as it once was, Manhattan’s Sutton Place neighborhood is on the rise. Comprising just about a dozen blocks along the East River between 53rd and 59th Streets, it’s home to a few world-famous institutions, including the United Nations and Sotheby’s auction house. A mix of stately apartment houses designed by esteemed architects like Rosario Candela and Emery Roth and gleaming glass towers, Sutton Place’s many parks and old-fashioned neighborhood shops give it the feeling of a small village in the teeming heart of the city. Past residents include Anne Harriman Vanderbilt, Marilyn Monroe, Freddie Mercury, and Jay-Z and Beyoncé.
Today, a new luxury edifice is helping to redefine the neighborhood. Sutton Tower, designed by Danish architect Thomas Juul-Hansen, offers 120 one- to five-bedroom residences in addition to a stunning penthouse. Developed by Gamma Real Estate and JVP Management, prices range from just over $2 million all the way up to $25 million.
The 850-foot-tall tower’s use of Bavarian limestone and a bronze-adorned crown demonstrates the building’s effort to assimilate with its historic surroundings. Each unit is located on a corner, providing fabulous views over the New York City skyline and East River waterfront.
The penthouse, asking $25 million, measures almost 4,600 square feet with four bedrooms and four and a half baths. Ceilings soar to 15 feet and four exposures mean there are 360-degree views through huge windows that drop all the way to the floor. Fine details and swanky materials include ebonized oak entry doors, lots of imported stone, and wide-plank rift-cut oak floorboards.
There’s a small inset loggia just outside the entrance gallery and the almost 35-foot-long fireside double living room flows into the adjacent dining room. Both the living and dining rooms have epic views that encompass the New York Harbor, the Atlantic Ocean, the 59th Street and George Washington Bridges and Central Park, not to mention the planes taking off and landing at LaGuardia. The windowed eat-in kitchen, jam-packed with all the usual high-end appliances expected in a home in this price range, features a snack-bar island and custom Italian white lacquer cabinetry framed with slabs of Statuarietto marble.
Each of the three guest bedrooms has a private bath with radiant-heated floor, while the corner primary suite has two walk-in closets (plus five additional closets!) and a windowed bathroom that showcases a two-sink vanity carved from a single block of Fior di Bosco marble. The powder room also has a sink carved from a single block of Fior di Bosco marble.
As is standard in brand-new luxury towers, amenities are out the wazoo: wine cellars and additional storage for purchase; an indoor pool with a mirrored cove ceiling; men’s and women’s spa suites and treatment rooms; a fitness center with a yoga studio; a recreation suite with games room, sports simulator and casual dining lounge; a club lounge that opens to a planted terrace; a formal dining room and a catering kitchen; a screening room.
The sky-high penthouse, as well as the other units in the building, are available via Corcoran Sunshine.
