This listing in the Hollywood Hills will likely be familiar to many readers from its previous appearance on the market a little over a year ago. Built for oil distribution manager George Estes, the Cahuenga Pass property is one of only 15 homes designed by L.A.’s foremost practitioner of the Streamline Moderne style, William Kesling, still standing — though it has been substantially expanded and updated over its lifetime.
The 1935 dwelling rises up from its curved lot like an ocean liner upon the waves, fronted by a scene-stealing semi-circular bank of steel-framed windows. Two sets of steel-pipe railed stairs lead past a flagstone planter to a glass front door, beyond which is a sun-soaked living room with original, honey-toned oak floors and a statement-making flagstone fireplace with a deep, rounded ledge.
The living room curves around to a breakfast nook, which flows into the cork-floored galley kitchen and formal dining room. A set of French doors lead from the dining room to the family room, on the other side of which is a bedroom and bath. Below the main structure is a self-contained studio unit outfitted with tile from Heath Ceramics, Fleetwood windows, and a Fisher & Paykel stove.
The home’s original footprint was expanded in 2002 by Jeff and Rochelle Mills of Mills Studio, who designed a boxy ultra-modern addition connected to the main residence via a cantilevered enclosed walkway. Featuring concrete floors, multiple skylights, and more Heath tile, the addition holds a primary bedroom suite, a media room with queen-sized Murphy bed, and an entertaining space with a covered metal fire-pit and floating bubble chair. A swiveling door leads from the bathroom to a hot tub, while up top there’s a deck with built-in benches.
Since last on the market, the home has gotten a new roof and hot tub, and updates to its kitchen and bathroom. Last sold for $1.95 million, it’s now asking $2.195 million.
Benjamin Kahle of Deasy Penner Podley holds the listing.
