Stamford, on the Connecticut coast, is an interesting city. Its downtown is bustling and vibrant, filled with corporate offices and financial professionals, yet there are still many pockets of distinctive and lovable vintage neighborhoods. Westover is one of them. It has an unique history dating back to Revolutionary times, along with a popular park, the centerpiece of which is the Mianus River. The Mianus River Park includes about 300 acres of mature forest and dramatic landscape with land divided between Stamford and Greenwich. The river is an extremely popular fishing spot, with the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection stocking the river with trout each fall and spring.
It just so happens that a peaceful, lovely waterfall on the Mianus River is situated on the land of a beguiling 1920s estate that has come for sale at $3 million. Listed by John Engel and Alyssa Novak at Douglas Elliman, the sylvan estate includes five acres of land with a main house plus numerous outbuildings.
The main house is a stunning stucco confection with six bedrooms and six and a half baths, all set in close to 5,800 square feet. A crimson-carpeted grand staircase welcomes visitors, as does the living room, with its stone fireplace that can only be described as “stately.” French doors offer tantalizing peeks of the pretty, mature gardens, a stone terrace and the swimming pool.
The library includes another attractive fireplace, along with patterned tile floor and recessed bookshelves painted turquoise, while the dining room includes picture windows that frame gorgeous garden vistas as well. Upstairs, the six bedrooms are elegant and gracious, with the main bedroom boasting a lovely curved ceiling and a unique fireplace, as well as windows on three sides. The main suite also has balconies to enjoy serene views of the river and waterfall.
With a slate roof and flagstone floor, the pool house includes a kitchen and bar for poolside entertaining. But that’s not all, folks! There’s also a chauffeur’s cottage, a guest house, and best of all, an old brick cottage that overlooks the waterfall. Paths through the raised beds and retaining walls, including an old fountain, lead to about 600 feet of river frontage. Enjoy catching dinner in your own back yard, secure in the knowledge that they really don’t make them like this any more.
