Back in 1958, noted architects Karl Klokke and Paul Wuesthoff were hired to craft this midcentury modern showpiece for Los Angeles psychiatrist Marvin Mandel and his wife Marion. Sited in the Rivas Canyon neighborhood of Pacific Palisades, the home was completed over the next two years and has remained in the same family ever since; now the striking post-and-beam residence has popped up on the market for the first time, asking a speck under $8 million.
Tucked away at the end of a secluded driveway, on over an acre of land laced with mature trees and colorful rose bushes, the lovingly preserved and updated structure features four bedrooms and five baths. A little over 4,100 square feet of stylish living space is currently staged to the nines by top interior designer Meridith Baer.
A spacious motorcourt and carport front the low-rise structure, which is accented by a flat roof, overhanging eaves and a bright red door opening to a gallery hallway. From there, steps descend to a retro-style sunken living room boasting a cement floor, massive stone fireplace with a floating hearth and sliding glass doors leading outside. An adjacent dining room displays built-in cabinetry and a wet bar, while a sleekly designed kitchen outfitted with a spacious eat-in peninsula connects to a cozy fireside family room.
All of the bedrooms are sequestered in two separate wings on either end of the house, including three on one side and a master retreat on the other containing a separate office/den, meditation and massage room, kitchenette and dual baths. Elsewhere is a studio/workout space with its own entrance; and outdoors, the private grounds host a freeform pool and spa, fruit orchard and an orchid house, plus plenty of spots ideal for al fresco dining and lounging.
The listing is held by Liz Jones and Fran Flanagan of Compass, with showings by appointment only.
