Back in early 2020, right before the global pandemic took hold, Tyrone McKillen was looking to upgrade into a home that would better accommodate his growing family. The co-founder and principal of Plus Development Group settled on a nearly century-old Mediterranean Revival mansion in a prime pocket of Los Angeles. But there was just one catch, and it was a big one: The place required “major surgery,” per a recent Architectural Digest article.
Fast-forward to today, and the stylishly updated showpiece has now returned to the market, asking $12.5 million. And though that’s $6.5 million more than McKillen — also a Compass real estate agent who is handling the listing — and wife Christina paid for the house less than three years ago, the couple did take everything down to the studs but the façade, relocated the interior staircase, and added an all-new kitchen and master retreat, just for starters.
“The property is an idyllic Hollywood hideaway,” says McKillen, who worked with DISC Interiors and Plus Development to renovate the original 1920s Walker & Eisen-designed home to make it “truly one of a kind.”
Secluded behind a lengthy cobblestone driveway and high hedges, on an over quarter-acre parcel in the historic Windsor Square neighborhood, the main stucco and terracotta-roof structure offers five bedrooms and six baths. A total of 7,000 square feet of two-level living space mixes period details with modern amenities like a movie theater, gym and Savant smart-home system, and there’s also a detached one-bedroom guesthouse with its own living room, kitchen and bath.
Among the highlights: a grand foyer with Moroccan limestone floors that flows via arched doorways to a wood-paneled office on one side, and a formal living room boasting herringbone oak floors and a wood-burning fireplace on the other. A family room retains the original French doors, while the formal dining room connects to a gourmet kitchen outfitted with high-end stainless appliances, a spacious marble-topped eat-in island and matching backsplash, and breakfast nook with built-in banquette seating.
All of the bedrooms can be found upstairs, where the sumptuous primary suite includes a seating area and showroom-style closet, plus a luxe bath adorned with a Waterworks soaking tub and steam shower; and outdoors, the grounds host edible organic gardens, a covered al fresco dining loggia, lap pool and spa, and sunken fire-pit lounge area. The aforementioned guesthouse sits atop a detached two-car garage.
