Though Marshall Lewis is widely known for his colorful mixed-media paintings, his other career as an award-winning architect has resulted in several avant-garde residences scattered across Los Angeles. One of these contemporary masterpieces just popped up for sale, on a secluded tree-lined street within the leafy Rustic Canyon neighborhood of Pacific Palisades, asking a smidge under $7.5 million.
Lending to this architectural property’s truly one-of-a-kind panache, according to listing agent Alexandra Pfeifer of Sotheby’s International Realty, is that it’s “super-sexy, with an amazing mix of old meets new, even though it was built almost 40 years ago.”
Tucked away behind a gated driveway, on a heavily wooded parcel spanning over one-third of an acre running alongside Rustic Creek, the curvaceous structure was built in the late 1980s. Five bedrooms and an equal number of baths are spread across a little more than 5,000 square feet of multi-level living space — all of it customized with exposed cement pillars, tile and hardwood floors, vaulted redwood-paneled ceilings dotted with clerestory windows and large expanses of glass offering seamless indoor-outdoor environs.
Especially standing out is a double-height living room boasting a fireplace, plus French doors spilling out to a covered patio ideal for al fresco dining and entertaining. Other highlights include a music room lined with a wall of windows, wet bar-equipped family room and formal dining room with built-in glass shelving, as well as a sleekly designed gourmet kitchen outfitted with high-end stainless appliances, an eat-in island and an accompanying breakfast nook.
An attractive staircase heads upstairs, where the romantic master retreat comes complete with a fireplace, private balcony, dual walk-in closets, a separate sitting room, and spa-inspired bath. A two-bedroom guest/children’s wing with a shared bath also can be found on this floor; and outdoors, the flat and grassy grounds are laced with mature redwood and sycamore trees, and host a rock-lined pool and spa. There’s also an attached art studio and three-car garage.
