Probably best known as an opera singer who reportedly toured with none other than John Philip Sousa, as well as a founder of the Krotona Colony of the American Theosophical Society, Marie “Helios” Russak Hotchener also made a name for herself as a self-trained architect. She designed a small number of Hollywood Hills residences, including the 1920s Moorcrest estate where Charlie Chaplin and Mary Astor once lived, and today is owned by Andy Samberg and Joanna Newsom.
Another of Hotchener’s creations is the alluring Andalusian-style Torre del Moro building in Beachwood Canyon, which was built way back in the early 1930s. Restored and converted into a five-unit condominium complex in 2005 by the design firm Howell & Padgett, one of those pads just popped up for sale with a $785,000 ask.
A gated entrance opens to a curving mosaic-tiled staircase, which ascends to living quarters offering one bedroom and one bath in 630 square feet punctuated throughout with the original dark hardwood floors, casement windows and Spanish Revival fixtures.
Highlights include a living room hosting French doors spilling out to a Juliette balcony, which connects to a light-filled kitchen outfitted with Carrara marble countertops, custom glass-front cabinetry, high-end Gaggenau, Miele and Sub-Zero appliances, and an accompanying breakfast nook.
A primary bedroom holds two California Closets and windows overlooking the woodsy surroundings, while a hallway nook “makes for an excellent work-from-home setup,” per the listing. There’s also a spacious outdoor terrace ideal for al fresco lounging and dining, along with a one-car garage and $387-per-month HOA fee. Check it all out at the open house this weekend.
The listing is held by Ali Wood Moser of Nourmand & Associates.
