Six months after selling their handsome 1920s hunting lodge in Los Feliz to Fred Armisen and Riki Lindhome, producer Lauren Lexton and her husband, storyboard artist Kevin MacCarthy, are looking to divest themselves of another property in their real estate portfolio, this one in Silver Lake.
Design-wise, the newly listed residence is pretty much the polar opposite of the quaint French Normandy-style lodge the couple unloaded back in September. As a 2002 New York Times story detailed, Lexton, the producer of scores of reality TV shows such as “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo,” “Toddlers & Tiaras,” and “Ace of Cakes,” and MacCarthy, whose storyboard credits include “Anchorman” and “There Will Be Blood,” commissioned architect Lorcan O’Herlihy to design and construct the hillside home in 2000, not long after they relocated to L.A. from New York’s East Village.
Addressing the challenges posed by the steeply inclined lot, O’Herlihy broke the home into separate sections, arranging them in a series of descending steps, strategically employing cantilevers, bracing, and retaining walls anchored by cylindrical concrete columns. On the lowest level is a two-car carport; next to it is a concrete staircase that ascends a glute-firming 55 steps up to the house.
Cantilevered over the hillside, the approximately 2,000-square-foot, light-filled home is composed as two rectangular volumes, one horizontal, one vertical. Within the larger, horizontally oriented section are the open-plan living and dining room areas, a mint-green kitchen with stainless appliances, den, guest bedroom and bathroom. The first-floor bedroom is equipped with an opaque partition that can be slid into place to create a second bedroom or private office. Other notable features on this level include a fireplace with Heath tile surround, hardwood floors, transom windows, built-in cabinetry, and French doors that open to a lengthy balcony deck.
Upstairs is a spacious primary suite with a clothes-horse’s closet and one entire wall of west-facing windows. A side glass door leads from the bedroom to a 600-square-foot rooftop terrace, where dinner party guests are sure to be duly impressed by blockbuster views overlooking the surrounding hills and extending all the way out to the ocean. After dinner, everyone can repair to the rear patio garden for a nightcap by the outdoor fireplace.
Lauded in a number of architectural books, including “Another 100 of the World’s Best Houses,” the property is listed with Laura Moreno and Eileen Moreno at The Moreno Group LA for an asking price a shade under $2 million.
