Though he passed away almost five decades ago, visionary real estate developer Joseph Eichler left behind an esteemed legacy that lives on throughout California — primarily in the 11,000-plus modernist residences he built in and around the San Francisco Bay Area; and one of these popular specimens just popped up for sale in the Marin County city of San Rafael, asking a shade over $2.6 million.
“This trophy home is one of the most well-built and thought-out Eichler remodels that I have ever seen,” says listing agent Renee Adelmann of Bay Area Modern Real Estate. “The dramatic effect it has when you walk through the front door in person and see the stunning resort-like backyard through the walls of glass is something that evokes the emotion of joy and appreciation of such thoughtful design. This home has a spiritual healing soul.”
Built way back in 1960, and last sold for $696,000 in spring 2004, the atrium house was extensively renovated and modernized in 2017 by local architect Shervin Tajbaksh. Tucked away on an almost quarter-acre parcel, the low-slung structure features four bedrooms and two baths in a little more than 1,800 square feet of single-level living space centered around a central atrium. Out front, the brown and white-trimmed exterior is highlighted by overhanging eaves and an attached two-car garage off to the side, with an amber-hued front door opening directly into its open-air court.
From there, a spacious living room is spotlighted by a wood-burning brick fireplace, plus glass sliders spilling out to a backyard. A dining area sporting a floating built-in buffet connects to the sleekly designed kitchen, which is outfitted with custom cabinetry, a center island, top-tier Wolf appliances, and a “hidden” refrigerator and coffee nook.
Down a hallway is the master retreat, which comes complete with a walk-in closet, as well as a nicely equipped bath with dual vanities and a large shower. Outdoors, the private grounds host a pool flanked by a wood sundeck and cozy lounge area warmed by a fire-pit, along with a built-in grilling station resting aside the perfect spot for al fresco dining. There’s also an additional place to relax atop the terraced backyard, and you can see it all this weekend at the first open house.
