Own a Stylish Piece of History: Raphael Soriano-Designed Modernist Mecca Lists in Los Feliz

Crafted by noted modernist architect Raphael Soriano, this fetching midcentury home was commissioned by surgeon Louis Gogol and his wife Bessie way back in 1939. Aptly known as the Gogol House, the International Bauhaus-style dwelling often is referred to as “the purest example of Soriano’s early work”; and it’s now on the market in Los Angeles for the first time in over a decade, asking $3.5 million.

One of only a dozen or so structures designed by the Richard Neutra and Rudolph Schindler disciple that still exist — he built more than 50, including the Shulman House in Hollywood Hills and Grossman House in Studio City — the three-story home underwent a recent restoration by its current owner, L.A. interior designer Douglas Levine, who purchased the architecturally pedigreed place back in 2011 for a mere $1.2 million. The result? A wealth of modern amenities paired with many of Soriano’s original design elements.

Nestled on a heavily wooded, 0.12-acre parcel in the Franklin Hills neighborhood of Los Feliz, the exterior of the house features stacked, white rectangular panels that are partially hidden away from the street by tall hedges and palms. Inside, three bedrooms and three bathrooms are spread out over a little more than 2,700 square feet of living space punctuated throughout by walls of glass, ceramic tile floors and designer lighting.
