A rare midcentury modern home designed by legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright and built in the early 1960s is being floated for sale at a speck over $1.5 million in New York’s Hudson Valley, according to a recent article by Robb Report.
Originally commissioned by Plaza Hotel pastry manager Socrates Zaferiou, sold to its current owner architectural designer Sarah Anderson-Magness for a mere $730,000 in 2014, and meticulously maintained and updated through the years, the house is one of nine prefab units Wright designed for builder Marshall Erdman in the 1950s as part of his Clausland Mountain Park development in the Rockland County suburb of Blauvelt; it’s also the only structure he created on the west bank of the Hudson River.
Though it’s not considered a classic Wright Usonian — because of a modified design specifically requested by Zaferiou that added an extra bedroom and a walk-out basement with high ceilings — the place does include many of the renowned architect’s original elements, such as asymmetrical rooms, built-ins, wood paneling and his signature “Cherokee red” pops of color.
Sited just 35 minutes from Manhattan, on a 2.5-acre parcel of land tucked between the Clausland Mountain and Tackamack parks, the striking L-shaped and flat-roofed beauty offers 2,619 square feet of single-level living space boasting a total of four bedrooms and three baths. An attached carport and gravel motorcourt can be found out front.
Easily standing out as the centerpiece: a sunken living room sporting an oversized masonry fireplace and French doors spilling out to an al fresco dining deck overlooking the woodsy backyard. That space flows to a dining area, and a galley-style kitchen with a breakfast nook that’s been updated with new appliances, but retains the original cabinetry, countertops and red floors. A lengthy gallery hallway passes by three bedrooms that share a bath before emptying out at an en-suite primary bedroom.
The listing is held by Richard Ellis and Brandon Wagner of Sotheby’s International Realty.
