An extravagant Palm Desert estate long owned by late publishing and hospitality tycoon Duane Hagadone — best known for founding northern Idaho’s Coeur d’Alene Golf & Spa Resort — has hit the market for a whopping $49.5 million. Lest you think that price might be a tad steep, consider the property’s many lavish amenities — three swimming pools, an aquarium tunnel with its own shark tank and not one but six kitchens. And that’s just for starters.
The multimillionaire purchased the land for $4.5 million in 2007, per records, and enlisted Indian Wells-based architect Guy Dreier to design him an elaborate winter home. Following the estate’s completion, he spent another 32 months customizing the premises. Situated in the Bighorn Golf Club — offering members access to two 18-hole golf courses, and a spa and wellness center — the estate lies about 15 miles from Palm Springs, and includes a striking mansion and several additional structures spread across an 8-acre parcel, surrounded by the ruggedly beautiful mountains and barren landscape for which Palm Desert is known. Floor-to-ceiling walls of automated sliding glass open the entire space to the outdoors.
An open-air elevator spills into the seven-bedroom, 12-bathroom main house, which bears a curved copper roof and an exterior clad in panther slate from India. Inside, about 32,000 square feet of living space is highlighted by a living room with a massive titanium fireplace, a striking Chihuly sculpture and unique wood-paneled ceiling. There’s also a hallway/tunnel leading to the dining room, which is encased by an aquarium with separate tanks for exotic fish and sharks. An opulent master retreat sports a fireplace, dual baths, dual closets and a private outdoor spa.
Additional structures include a four-bedroom guest pavilion with a lounge area and kitchen, detached private office etched into the rocky mountainside and oversized garage with room for up to 10 vehicles. Then there are the spectacular resort-like grounds, which are showcased by three interconnected pools — two with infinity edges — plus waterfalls and koi ponds, a pickleball court, firepits, an outdoor kitchen and several lounge areas.
Jade Mills and Steve Frankel of Coldwell Banker jointly hold the listing with Bighorn Properties.
