DIRT readers often notice and remark on how white so many Hamptons houses are on the inside. While fashion and timidity play a part in the colors (or lack of) chosen for a home, the quality of light matters a great deal too. A color that looks great in a hot, bright tropical climate can look florid in the Northeast’s clear gray light. White just always looks right in the Hamptons.
But as this East Hampton residence shows, well-chosen bright colors can add a fabulous punch of decorative panache to a Hamptons house. Situated on an acre in the town’s Northwest Woods, the navy-blue living room sports 10-foot ceilings and a gas fireplace set in some handsome millwork. The rich color and zebra print cushions and rug make the orange zebra print Scalamandre wallpaper pop in the adjacent dining area and the double-height kitchen. Also quite attractive is the shiny orange tiled backsplash. On this level, too, is a fantastic screened porch that showcases a massive river-stone fireplace.
Things get more chromatically sedate in the bedrooms, with white walls and Shaker-style four-poster beds, while some bathrooms sport funky black and white wallpaper. There is also a quiet den with wood burning fireplace, done in soothing browns. In all, there are four bedrooms and four baths in 3,300 square feet, set on one acre of land.
An attached but separate wing on the upper level leads to a one-bedroom/one-bath guest suite with an outside entrance, a wet bar, and a spacious living area. And in addition to the two-car garage, an unfinished lower level could be finished for additional living space.
Outside, the mahogany deck overlooks the lawn surrounding the 40-foot heated saltwater pool. An outdoor shower and a beautiful stone patio garden complete this meticulously landscaped and picturesque property.
Just a short drive to East Hampton village, the property is listed at $2.495 million with Susan Ryan, John Esposito, and Cassandra Esposito at Compass.
