Back in 2012, the owner of this quirky stunning midcentury modern high in the hills of Encino described the structure in an L.A. Times article as “the kind of home Mike Brady would have built for some really eccentric clients.” He couldn’t have been more spot-on with his analogy. Think a dramatic exterior consisting of three 12-sided rotundas connected by a glass pavilion lined with palms, complemented by retro-esque interiors offering up a one-of-a-kind hot pink and purple kitchen and sunken fireside conversation pit with built-in seating. There’s also a fun little avocado green bath sporting a pie-shaped shower, just for good measure.
Designed and built in 1972 by noted modernist architect Donald G. Park, the house was a custom job for the late West Coast nightclub and liquor store owner Joby Lewis and his wife Helen. The next owners were Peter and Shannon Loughrey — he a guest appraiser on PBS’ “Antiques Roadshow,” and both founders of Los Angeles Modern Auctions — who picked up the place in 2011 for $1.9 million, a whopping million dollars less than the original ask. Unfortunately, Peter passed away in 2020; and Shannon has opted to put the stylish post-and-beam pad back on the market, this time for $8.5 million. But the pair did significantly update the residence during their tenure, which included the seamless addition of a third Park-designed rotunda atop the attached three-car garage.
Nestled on more than an acre near Lake Encino, at the end of a cul-de-sac street overlooking the San Fernando Valley, the property features panoramic views of the surrounding canyons, mountains and city lights. Six bedrooms and an equal number of baths are spread across almost 7,000 square feet of living space, which is punctuated throughout by floor-to-ceiling walls of glass, vaulted wood-paneled ceilings, granite partitions and designer lighting.
Everything is tucked away in the aforementioned rotundas: one a single-level affair holding the public spaces, another a two-level design hosting the bedrooms, and the most recent annex housing a bedroom, sitting room, dining room and kitchen. Highlights include a vintage bar, two dining areas and a striking beamed skylight atop the conversation pit, along with a striking spiral staircase clad in the original green carpet that leads to an upstairs master suite. Outdoors, the picturesque grounds include a pool and spa, an expansive patio and a cozy gas firepit. The Brady Bunch patriarch would likely approve!
