There’s a popular couch cushion in the Hamptons that reads, “You never know how many friends you have until you own a beach house.” And that will certainly be true for the next owner of this bayfront compound in Westhampton that has plenty of room for a big family and lots of friends.
Less ballyhooed than some of its wealthier neighbors to the east, Westhampton is a charming hamlet that offers a vibrant downtown filled with good restaurants and adorable shops, a performing arts center, and an airport that takes larger planes than ones farther to the east. As charming as the hamlet is, Westhampton can be a little controversial among locals, geographically speaking. Some people insist it is the westernmost start of the Hamptons, while snootier purists contend that only communities to the east of the Shinnecock Canal count as the Hamptons. However, while they squabble, Westhamptonites enjoy an easy-going pace, less traffic, and lots of big ol’ stately homes similar to those famously found to the east.
Situated on a peninsula of almost two acres and aptly dubbed The Point, the sprawling estate comprises almost 12,500 square feet of living space between the spacious main house, a classic shingled cottage, and the carriage house. There are eight bedrooms and nine bathrooms, plus a couple of powder rooms, in the main house, while the carriage house sports two more bedrooms and two more bathrooms. Other highlights of the property include a thoroughly modern 50′ x 24′ zero-edge pool with integral spa, some 380 feet of frontage on Moriches Bay, and a private dock.
Whatever one thinks of Westhampton’s relationship to The Hamptons, what is not in dispute is that Westhampton is expensive. The Point is listed with Enzo Morabito at Douglas Elliman at cool $22 million.
Owned by a couple of private equity types (who seem to be moving to Palm Beach), the interiors of the main house are especially attractive, so it’s no surprise they were done by fancy-schmancy interior designer Bunny Williams. Inviting built-ins and gorgeous millwork rule the interiors, even down to the cute-as-a-button bunk room for children or grandchildren.
Commensurate with a mansion that will comfortably house 16 or more people, the main house’s kitchen is enviably (and necessarily) spacious with an attractively stenciled wood floor and a butler’s pantry. The study, painted green, is also particularly lovely, and the neutral living room makes a great backdrop for the sellers’ multicolored Frank Stella paintings. Other rooms in which to relax and entertain include an atrium, a morning room, a formal dining room, a great room, and a gym. Throughout, enormous windows maximize the fantastic water views and for practicality’s sake, state-of-the-art geothermal heating and cooling systems and a generator have been installed.
With close proximity to Westhampton Country Club and all that Main Street has to offer, not to mention easy access to some of the best ocean beaches in the country, this fabulous waterfront compound will surely have all your co-workers, friends, and family, including your annoying cousin from Kansas, calling you up and telling you how much they miss you and want to come for a visit.
