After renovating and residing in several architecturally significant Los Angeles-area homes — designed by the likes of Harwell Hamilton Harris, Charles and Henry Greene, and Rudolph Schindler — TV movie screenwriter Michael Murray and therapist Kelly Craig Jones decided to turn their sights toward this charming 1930s Spanish Revival in Glendale.
The couple purchased the place for a mere $960,000 back in 2011, and then engaged noted preservation architect Kelly Sutherlin McLeod, widely known for her award-winning conservation work on the landmark Gamble House, to extensively renovate the kitchen and add a primary suite. Now, 12 years later, the stylish digs have returned to the market, asking $2.65 million.
Tucked away on a gated parcel spanning just over a quarter-acre, in the Ard Eevin Highlands Historic District, the stucco and terracotta-roof structure features four bedrooms and a matching number of baths in a little more than 2,800 square feet of single-level living space, all of it boasting a mix of tile and hardwood floors, wide arched doorways, beamed ceilings and vintage light fixtures.
A tree-lined street and grassy yard introduce the house, which has a gated driveway off to the side that travels underneath a porte-cochère before emptying out at a detached three-door garage in the rear of the property. In front, a covered porch and wood door provide entry into a central hallway, which immediately flows to a sunken fireside living room that steps up to a formal dining room sporting an integrated hutch and windows overlooking a courtyard bolstered by a fountain.
An adjacent kitchen is outfitted with an eat-in island, high-end stainless appliances, a walk-in pantry and cozy breakfast room. From there, a slender hall adorned with a built-in bookshelf heads back to the newer master retreat, which features access to a patio, a sitting area and walk-in closet, plus a bath equipped with heated floors, dual vanities, a soaking tub and shower.
Elsewhere are three additional bedrooms, including one with its own bath and another that’s been converted into an office space; and outdoors, the secluded backyard is lined with hedges, and hosts a saltwater pool and separate hot tub, along with plenty of spots ideal for lounging and entertaining.
The listing is held by Peter Martocchio and David Goldberg of Sotheby’s International Realty.
