More than two years after it first hit the market with an ambitious $12.5 million price tag, this eye-catching residence in the Linda Vista neighborhood of Pasadena has popped up for sale again, this time with freshly staged interiors, some design upgrades, updated listing photos, a new agent and substantially reduced $6.8 million ask.
Built in 1973 and designed by noted architect A. Quincy Jones, the place was specifically used by its philanthropist homeowners Adelaide and Alexander Hixon to host fundraising events and parties. Before her death in 2019 at age 101, Adelaide — an heiress to an Iowa lumber fortune — bequeathed the couple’s longtime home next door and this building on the same four-lot compound to Harvey Mudd College, where she had previously helped found the Hixon Center for Climate and the Environment in her husband’s memory.
Though the main house — designed in the ’50s by architect Thornton Ladd — sold awhile back for nearly $3 million, with proceeds going to the Claremont-based institution, the adjacent home crafted by Jones is still available.
Tucked away behind a lengthy tree-lined driveway, on an acre-plus parcel of heavily wooded land nestled at the southern edge of the picturesque Arroyo Seco, the glass and metal structure has three bedrooms and five baths in just over 7,100 square feet of two-level living space. In addition to its eye-catching angular exterior and circular motorcourt bolstered by an enchanting bonsai tree, the grounds boast numerous courtyards and atriums surrounded by gardens and a cascading waterfall.
Inside, vast walls of glass overlook sweeping views of the Rose Bowl, San Gabriel Valley, Downtown L.A. and Pacific Ocean beyond, and there’s also an atrium and a koi pond. Other highlights include a double-height living room spotlighted by a floor-to-ceiling metal fireplace, plus a kitchen outfitted with a commercial-size refrigerator, an eat-in island and an accompanying breakfast nook. Elsewhere is a light-filled mezzanine level, which hosts the bedrooms, as well as a fireside family room and massive wet bar-equipped living/dining area.
The listing is held by Gus Ruelas of The Agency and Tim Durkovic of Douglas Elliman.
