Though much of Paul Allen’s vast property portfolio has been snatched up since his death almost five years ago — including a palatial Beverly Hills estate that just traded hands for $45 million — one of the late Microsoft co-founder’s residences still lingers on the market in New Mexico. First listed for $22.6 million back in 2021 and yet to be transferred, the 20-acre compound recently underwent another price chop and is now available at a substantially reduced $15 million.
The reclusive tech billionaire and philanthropist reportedly purchased the spread in 2000 for around $12 million, and then restructured the premises into a multi-use property. Sited three miles outside of downtown Santa Fe, amid the foothills of the Sun and Moon Mountain, the place features a Spanish Pueblo Revival-style main house and multiple accessory dwellings — for a grand total of 21 bedrooms and 26 baths in a little more than 18,600 square feet.
Originally built way back in the late 1930s for Dr. and Mrs. Harold Corbusier — and named “Sol y Sombra” (sun and shade) — the place was occupied by noted modernist artist Georgia O’Keeffe, who lived there from 1984 until her death in 1986 at age 98, and subsequently sold to Houston-based businessman Charles Miller and his wife Beth.
Tucked away behind a lengthy gated driveway that passes by a guard house, the three-story, six-bedroom main home has nearly 9,200 square feet of living space boasting a mix of brick hardwood floors, exposed wood-beam ceilings, adobe walls and kiva fireplaces throughout. Highlights include formal living and dining rooms, a library, game room, gourmet kitchen and sunroom, plus upstairs living areas accessible via an elevator or a privacy gate resting atop the stairs.
Among the additional structures: a former carriage house that’s since been converted into a theater building, replete with a screening room, kitchen/concession area, bedroom, bath and patio, along with guest quarters, a conference center, and an event venue sporting a central water feature, catering kitchen, dry sauna and roof deck.
As for the picturesque grounds, they’re laced with cottonwood trees, desert flora and sculptures, and host an Edward Mazria-designed steel-and-glass greenhouse that has an attached kitchen, dining area, an office, and most notably, a Bodhi tree grown from seeds gifted to the Millers from the Dalai Lama during their tenure that are said to be from the exact tree Buddha sat underneath to gain enlightenment.
Upon Allen’s passing in October 2018, he left a $26 billion fortune and one of the world’s largest collections of trophy real estate. Most of those properties have since been sold, including his NYC penthouse units, as well as his “Enchanted Hill” vacant lot in Los Angeles, Silicon Valley mansion and Hawaiian estate. A Christie’s auction of Allen’s art collection that included O’Keefe paintings also fetched $1.5 billion in November 2022.
The New Mexico listing is held by Paul Duran and Kelly Allen of Keller Williams Luxury Santa Fe.
