After falling out of favor in 2020 with the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic, it appears luxury hotel living may be coming back into vogue. One of L.A.’s most exclusive hotel/residential confections, the five-star Maybourne Beverly Hills, has seen three notable recent sales — while that may not seem like many, consider that the building has just 20 residences in total, all of them multimillion-dollar units owned by the likes of Judge Judy, oil heiress Ariadne Getty, LA Fitness founder Louis Welch, and Rams owner Stan Kroenke.
Built in 2008 and reportedly modeled after grand 1920s Spanish Revival-style mansions that dot the Los Angeles landscape, the Maybourne building was known as the Montage Beverly Hills prior to 2019, when it was sold for $415 million to the London-based Maybourne Hotel Group. Whatever one’s opinions of the elaborate architecture, the building is certainly glamorous, towering over a prime corner in downtown Beverly Hills and just steps to Rodeo Drive.
The 20 Maybourne residences lay claim the top three floors of the hotel — those would be the sixth, seventh, and eighth floors — and sport private elevators with easy access to all the hotel’s lavish amenities. That includes the 20,000-square-foot fitness center with spa and massage facilities, a decadent rooftop pool, plus five-star dining and reservation-only bars.
One of the recently resold units, located on the seventh floor, went for $11 million to cheese baron Gustavo Marquez, an owner of the El Mexicano brand sold in supermarkets and restaurants. The other two units — one of them on the sixth floor, one on the eighth — went for about $7 million and $10 million to the same buyer, prominent Brazilian businesswoman Leila Pereira.

Image Credit: Realtor.com While she’s not a household name stateside, Pereira is something of a celebrity in her native Brazil. The 56-year-old is president and owner of Crefisa, one of the country’s largest financial institutions. But she’s probably best-known for her generous financial support of Palmeiras, one of Brazil’s most popular football clubs. In recent years, Crefisa has emerged as the club’s biggest financial supporter, investing millions annually, and media reports have suggested Pereira will be the club’s next president, with an election scheduled for November 2021.
Pereira’s popularity among Brazilian football fans has allowed her to amass more than 650,000 followers on Instagram, where she’s certainly not shy about her lifestyle, showing off stories and videos of her new Maybourne units and documenting her outings to chi-chi local restaurants like Nobu Malibu.

She shares that flat with her longtime husband, billionaire Jose Roberto Lamacchia, the founder of Crefisa. (Lamacchia, one of Brazil’s most respected financiers and a lifelong football fan now in his late 70s, typically makes fewer public appearances than his more social wife.)
