When it comes to the real estate market’s ultra-high-end sector — homes worth tens of millions — a bit of owner capriciousness comes with the territory. Naturally, folks can afford it. The latest example is the 90210 mansion of music star John Legend and his embattled wife Chrissy Teigen, which the couple sold back in July for $16.8 million. Just three months later, the house is already back up for sale, newly saddled with a $19.2 million ask.
The buyers were reputedly a Canada-based couple, Drs. Sheldon and Meryl Elman — he’s a medical doctor-turned-entrepreneur in the private equity sphere, she’s a psychologist — and they’ve either rapidly changed their minds about the place or see an opportunity for quick profit. (But it’s worth noting that the Teigen-Legends themselves had a real devil of a time selling the house; it sat on the market for nearly a year and ultimately sold for $7 million less than they originally wanted.)
Located in the mountains above Beverly Hills’ Coldwater Canyon and originally constructed in 1966 but completely rebuilt and expanded some years ago, the 8,500-square-foot mansion was also once owned by Rihanna, who notoriously ran into problems of her own while selling the place a decade ago. Legend and Teigen bought the house in 2016 for $14.1 million and subsequently remodeled the estate, adding a unique patterned ceiling imported from Thailand, painting the exterior and interior walls, upgrading the bespoke kitchen and refinishing the wide-plank oak floors.
A chunky double-sided fireplace bisects the spacious family and living rooms, while the upstairs primary suite — one of five bedrooms in the house — flaunts a handmade brass fireplace and private balcony, plus what the listing calls a “glam room” and dual showroom closets. Outside, the dark-bottomed saltwater pool is heated and has spectacular canyon views. A vine-wrapped pergola additionally offers a built-in BBQ grill and wood-burning oven. Elsewhere on the property are a gym and movie theater.
It’s unclear if the Elmans plan to buy another L.A. home once this property is sold. As for Teigen and Legend, they’ve moved on to a $17.5 million house elsewhere in the mountains above Beverly Hills. They also maintain a lavish Big Apple getaway in prime Manhattan.
Joyce Rey of Coldwell Banker holds the listing.
