A house in Malibu is currently having a moment! The spectacular Dutch Colonial, which sits on a private road atop a sloping bluff overlooking the Pacific Coast Highway and ocean beyond, has become the go-to locale anytime a Los Angeles-based production calls for a property with a Hamptons or Cape Cod-esque feel. Capped by a dynamic gambrel roof and shingled in copper-toned Cedar shake siding trimmed in pristine white, the pad looks like it was ripped right off the picturesque shores of Montauk or Martha’s Vineyard! So its use as the Massachusets island getaway of President Bill Clinton (Clive Owen) on the latest season of “American Crime Story” titled “Impeachment” must have been a no-brainer. Producers just had to be sure the place was available for filming, considering it was pulling double duty at the time, also appearing as the home of popular podcaster Poppy Scoville-Parnell (Octavia Spencer) on the Apple TV+ series “Truth Be Told,” which just wrapped its second season. With its alluring East Coast Traditional aesthetic, it is not hard to see how the pad became a screen favorite.
In reality, the dwelling can be found tucked against the pastoral foothills of the Santa Monica Mountains at 27720 Winding Way across from Escondido Beach in the tony, ultra-exclusive Winding Way community. (Please remember this is a private home. Do not trespass or bother the residents or the property in any way.) As famed local real estate agent (and BFF of “Beverly Hills, 90210’s” Shannen Doherty) Chris Cortazzo notes of the upscale and oft-filmed residential enclave, “Some of the homes in Winding Way have recorded some of the highest per-square-foot prices ever seen in Malibu (or in Southern California, for that matter), topping out at over $3,000.” For those wondering, Zillow “zestimates” the Dutch Colonial’s current PPSF at just north of a not-too-shabby $1,800!

Image Credit: Realtor.com A relative newcomer to the Malibu landscape, the sprawling estate was built by prolific Venice-based architect Lewin Wertheimer in 2007. Though a mere 14 years old, the dwelling’s appeal is timeless, which is a hallmark of any Wertheimer design. As Franklin Report Card notes, Lewin homes “look as if they have always been here and should be here.”

Image Credit: Realtor.com With five bedrooms (four of which are ensuite) and nine baths spread throughout a total of 10,000 square feet, the abode is not short on space. The main house, which measures in at 7,558 square feet, is an entertainer’s showplace with a grand entry, a formal dining room complete with a fireplace, a study lined with built-ins and a colossal chef’s kitchen outfitted with a Viking range, Carerra marble counters and a butler’s pantry.

Image Credit: Realtor.com Lined by expansive windows and French doors, the home was designed to emphasize the lot’s sweeping panoramic views, which reach from Point Dume to Santa Monica. As such, the interior color schematic was kept neutral to highlight the deep blues of the surrounding Pacific. With a focus on warmth and comfort, the residence lacks any sort of stuffiness or formality. According to Luxe Interiors + Design magazine, which showcased the property in a 2010 issue, the coastal aesthetic was meant to evoke a “been here forever beach house feel.”
The 3,000-square-foot finished basement certainly reflects that sentiment. The ultimate hang-out spot, the space features a home theatre/media room, a gym, a playroom and, taking a cue from Candy Spelling, a craft room/gift-wrapping suite.

Image Credit: Realtor.com Marny Randall of Randall Landscape Design was tasked with fashioning the lush 5.8-acre grounds, which are outfitted with a rose garden, fruit tree orchard and herb garden. As described by Luxe magazine, “The edges of the property’s developed areas bleed seamlessly back into the native vegetation.” The lot also features an outdoor fireplace, a children’s playground, multiple fountains, a pool with a pool pavilion, a spa, a tennis court and an equestrian corral. A guest suite can also be found situated above the four-car garage.
The pad’s current owners acquired the place in 2012 for just a hair over $10.2 million. Today, its value is estimated at $18.5 million. Not a bad ROI, especially considering the filming revenue the place has generated in the ensuing years!

Image Credit: 20th Century Fox It is at the property that Bill Clinton, his wife, Hillary (Edie Falco), and daughter, Chelsea (Anastasia Barkow), escape following the President’s national address admitting his affair with 22-year-old White House intern Monica Lewinsky (Beanie Feldstein) in the eighth episode of “Impeachment: American Crime Story” titled “Stand By Your Man.” (And yes, the production did re-create the family’s infamous August 18, 1998 walk across the South Lawn to the waiting Marine One that took them to the Vineyard.)

Image Credit: 20th Century Fox Both the interior and exterior of the residence appear extensively throughout the episode as Bill attempts to win back his wife’s favor. The serene surroundings provide a rather stark backdrop for an epic fight between the embittered couple in which Hillary unloads on Bill with a fiery diatribe that starts out with the choice words, “You are chaos! You are mayhem! It’s like everywhere you go, everything you do, it just disorients people long enough for you to have your way.” At the end of the episode, Bill winds up departing Martha’s Vineyard alone, leaving Hillary behind at the house.

Image Credit: Apple TV+ As mentioned, the property also portrays the home of Poppy and her husband, attorney Ingram Rhoades (Michael Beach), on “Truth Be Told.” Though the pad does not exactly call to mind Bay Area-style architecture, it is purported to be located somewhere in the vicinity of San Franciso on the mystery series.

Image Credit: Apple TV+ Only the exterior of the residence is utilized by the production. The inside of Poppy and Ingram’s house is just a set, albeit one very closely modeled after the Winding Way home’s real interior.

Image Credit: Disney-ABC The abode is also one of several spots used to portray Grayson Manor, the massive Hamptons estate belonging to Victoria Grayson (Madeleine Stowe) and her dysfunctional family on the ABC series “Revenge.” Though a digitally-altered home in East Hampton appeared in all establishing shots of the locale, the Winding Way house was regularly utilized for on-location exterior scenes involving the Grayson residence throughout the show’s four-season run, including in the episode titled “Charade” in which Emily Thorne (Emily VanCamp) takes a phone call by the property’s pool.

Image Credit: Disney-ABC The pad also popped us as the Hamptons house belonging to Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion), where the best-selling-author-turned-NYPD-consultant attempts to take Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) for a romantic weekend getaway in the season five episode of “Castle” titled “Murder He Wrote.”
