Image Credit: Lindsay Blake Countless celebrities have also been photographed on the premises. Along with Salma Hayek, everyone from Reese Witherspoon to Jennifer Love Hewitt to Tom Hiddleston has posed against the incredible scenery. Sharon Stone was even shot there along with Duquette, her friend and longtime neighbor, for the October 1999 issue of Town & Country magazine. So filming “Ratched” at the property must have felt like coming home!

Image Credit: Netflix The vibrant home is used to spectacular effect on “Ratched.” And Sharon Stone had a hand in its inclusion in the series. As production designer Judy Becker told Variety of Lenore’s residence, “It was originally written as sort of a grander empty Moroccan-style palace. I thought we would find that easily in L.A., but we didn’t find anything great.” It was at that point that Sharon suggested the “Ratched” team take a look at Dawnridge – and the rest is history!

Image Credit: Netflix Set decorator Matthew Flood Ferguson also added some key furnishings to date the place back to the 1940s, the time period in which “Ratched” is set. He told House Beautiful, “We brought in quite a few pieces: The coral side chairs, the red and black lacquered coffee tables, the period lamps, and so on, but never straying too far from Tony Duquette’s design aesthetic and palette.”

Image Credit: Netflix If possible, the estate’s exterior is even more of a feast for the eyes than the interior! The rambling terraced gardens, which sit on three levels, boast a treehouse, a large koi pond with a waterfall, and multiple temples and pagodas. Wilkinson described Tony as having “painted” the backyard “with plants.” It’s a valid assertion. The designer certainly created a beautiful palette – one that serves as a rich backdrop for the tormented lives of the Osgoods.

Image Credit: Netflix While “Ratched” made extensive use of Dawnridge, shooting virtually every angle of the property, Henry’s bedroom, where his bloody amputation occurs in “Angel of Mercy,” was a just set constructed inside of a soundstage on the Fox Studio Lot in Culver City. Its design was very clearly inspired by Dawnridge’s owner’s suite, though, with a similar canopied bed, gilded ceiling and painted recessed window sills.

Image Credit: Lindsay Blake As part of her promotion of the series, Stone returned to Dawnridge yet again to pose for the October 2020 cover story of Town & Country magazine, just as she had 21 years prior with Duquette.
Until next time, Happy Stalking! 🙂
