
Into musical theater as a kid and, thanks to her portrayal of Gabriella Montez in the megahit “High School Musical” franchise, launched into the stratosphere of international superstardom as a teenager, multihyphenate performer Vanessa Hudgens, now 33, is a seasoned showbiz veteran with a nonstop schedule.
She has several Broadway productions under her triple-threat belt, a couple dozen films on her resumé, and she was a judge for a couple of seasons on the long-running reality dance competition “So You Think You Can Dance.” She’ll soon appear on the silver screen in an adaptation of Chuck Klosterman’s 2008 novel “Downtown Owl,” and she’s signed on to star in and produce the upcoming female trucker movie “Big Rig.” Having split with actor Austin Butler in 2020, she’s since coupled up with professional baseball player Cole Tucker, she launched a soft drink made from cactus water, and she co-hosted a livestream of this year’s Met Gala for Vogue just before she co-hosted the 30th MTV Movie & Video Awards. She’s busy.
Nonetheless, the long reigning “Queen of Coachella” has found time to buy and sell homes in both Los Angeles and New York. In L.A., earlier this year, after it appeared in Architectural Digest, she sold a century-old estate in the historic Los Feliz area in an off-market deal for $6.7 million to investigative journalist Ronan Farrow. Around the same time she plunked down $7.5 million for a newly refurbished modern farmhouse-style residence in the popular Studio City area of the San Fernando Valley.
And in New York, she’s recently unloaded a pint-sized luxury condo on the fourth floor of the humongous, full-service Austin Nichols House complex in Brooklyn’s hipster-packed Williamsburg neighborhood. The 669-square-foot apartment has just one-bedroom and one bathroom.
It’s not clear when or even if Hudgens ever occupied the apartment, but records indicate it was acquired in the spring of 2018 for $983,000 and sold in September for $975,000. That means, of course, not counting improvements, carrying costs and real estate fees, a bit of money was lost on the deal. No worries. Not only was Hudgens pulling down a couple million a year during her late teens, she’s got cactus water money now!
Since the condo was not available on the open market (photos are from when the unit was available in 2018), nothing is known about what improvements or alterations may have been made over the last few years. However, marketing material from the time it was available back in 2018 describe it as “flooded with natural sunlight” and enhanced with “neighborhood views.” Floors throughout were tobacco smoked oak laid in a snazzy herringbone pattern, the itty-bitty galley kitchen was jam-packed with chef-quality designer appliances, and the bathroom featured a mosaic-tile floor and walls clad in Gioia Carrara marble.
Originally designed by Cass Gilbert and built in 1915 as a grocery trade, the building was converted to a bourbon distillery before it was skillfully transformed into loft-inspired condos around 2018 by Morris Adjmi Architects. Residents of the waterfront complex, which occupies an entire city block, are treated to a pampering cornucopia of amenities, among them doormen and concierge services, co-working spaces, a resident’s café, children’s playroom, movie theater, fitness center, rooftop deck with sweeping views of the Manhattan skyline, and on-site parking.
