That was fast.
It was barely six months ago that “Promising Young Woman” star Carey Mulligan and Mumford & Sons front man Marcus Mumford swooped in and plunked down $6.5 million for a fashionably modernized 1920s Spanish Revival-style home just above L.A.’s perennially trendy Sunset Strip. It’s not clear if the two-time Oscar-nominee and the Grammy-winning musician ever moved in; the house has been returned to the market this week with a not-even-breaking-even asking price of $6.495 million and the same listing images used to market the property in 2022.
Nipped down a small cul-de-sac and largely obscured from passersby behind thick Podocarpus and bamboo hedging, the gated property includes a three-story turreted main house of almost 4,600 square feet, along with a detached two-car garage converted to a recording studio by the previous owner, powerhouse pop songwriter Freddy Wexler.
A fuchsia wave of bougainvillea arches over the front door that opens to light-filled rooms that showcase wide-plank wood floors, arched doorways, and Venetian plaster walls. The dining room overlooks the step-down living room, where a giant, single-pane picture window frames a foliage-trimmed over-the-rooftops city view. French doors allow the family room to spill out to a courtyard paved in a checkerboard pattern tile, while the homey, upscale kitchen is jazzed up with navy-blue cabinets and a starburst patterned tile backsplash behind the range.
Three of the home’s four bedrooms, including the primary suite, are located on the uppermost level, while a fourth is tucked down on the lowest floor along with a lounge/playroom and a screening room.
The lower level opens to an elevated terrace with a cushioned built-in sofa and fire pit. And beneath the garage/recording studio, an arched loggia complete with a full outdoor kitchen provides a respite from the heat and sun alongside the dark-bottom swimming pool. Five off-street parking spots are a nice bonus for any auto aficionado.
The property is available through Justin P. Huchel at Carolwood Estates.
Pen pals as children who reconnected as adults and married in 2012, Mulligan and Mumford also own a 16th century farmhouse in the English countryside, where they quarantined during the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as a residence in London.
