He’s long been a rap metal icon and fiery political activist capable of filling stadiums around the globe, but Zack de la Rocha also enjoys a mellow life in his hometown. From 2014 until 2021, the L.A. native owned a modest Silver Lake bungalow with its own detached studio. Two years later, he’s returned to the same neighborhood, having recently bought a sublime midcentury home just a short jog from his old place.
Conceived in 1953 by midcentury specialist Gregory Ain in collaboration with fellow architect James H. Garrott, the house was built for noted artist Bernice “Burr” Singer. In 2010, the property was purchased for $1.1 million by artist Jed Lind and his wife, popular stylist Jessica de Ruiter, who gave the place a thorough Scandinavian-influenced interior renovation and restoration.
It’s clear that de la Rocha fell hard for this house, and others did too — he won a fierce bidding war by paying $3.7 million, or a whopping $700,000 more than what Lind and de Ruiter had requested for the premises. But it’s not hard to see why. The place is pure California cool, with a two-car carport out front, a swimming pool out back and 2,000 square feet of distinctly modernist living space in between.
Over the years, the house has been published numerous times — in everything from Vogue and One Kings Lane to Martha Stewart Living and My Scandinavian Home.
Inside, the residence has two distinct levels. A larger main floor offers public rooms, including a Miele kitchen with Carrara marble countertops open to a dining area with a balcony and panoramic views. There’s a living room with original Douglas fir hardwood floors and a fireplace, a wood-paneled office with a hidden Murphy bed overlooking the pool area, and a step-down den with treetop views.
As for the second level, it consists of a cozy master suite and a secondary bedroom suite, plus a bonus room ideal for use as an intimate home theater. The property also offers a grassy lawn shaded by olive trees, plus a wee detached structure ideal for use as a recording studio or work-from-home office. As for the aforementioned pool, it’s surrounded by tall, ivy-covered walls for celebrity-style privacy.
De la Rocha, 53, also owns a multimillion-dollar cottage on Malibu’s Point Dume. Per reports, his net worth tops $25 million.
