It may not look like the home you’d expect from a stadium-filling, frenzy-whipping, head-banging rap metal icon, but this charming Eastside bungalow is owned by famously polemical performer Zack de la Rocha, best-known as the frontman for L.A.’s own Rage Against the Machine. Yet few areas of town have been as hip and buzzy for the length of time Silver Lake has, and this place lies on one of the neighborhood’s most desirable streets. So while the house feigns modesty and the location will never be mistaken for Beverly Hills, it’s perfect for a guy whose net worth is widely believed to top $25 million.
The rocker bought the property in 2014, paying about $1.3 million. For the current $1.65 million ask, the buyer will receive a century-old main house with just under 1,500 square feet of living space, plus a detached studio with another 236 square feet. Wedged in between the two structures, set into a wooden patio, is an elegantly rectangular swimming pool that’s privately screened away from neighbors by a thick wall of bamboo.
The main house itself is also privately screened from the street out front, mostly invisible behind a tall, well-watered hedge. And while there’s no garage, the property has one large space for off-street parking, conveniently shaded by mature trees. There’s also plenty of parking on the street, which is unusually wide by tightly-packed Silver Lake standards.
Inside the light-filled cottage are original Douglas Fir hardwood floors and casement windows, plus modern conveniences that include recessed LED lights and an open floorplan that effortlessly married the living and dining rooms with the chef’s kitchen.
